RACE
DAY - All competitors please read:
Please appreciate this meeting is like
no other meeting at Standlake, for that reason it is essential that all racers
including our locals fully cooperate with us from the moment you enter the
Arena.
Please arrive in good time, don't leave it until the last minute,
gates will be open at 8 am.
On entering the pits please park where the
marshals direct you.
The top pits are for Under 1800cc Bangers only, also no
BIG lorries are allowed in the top pits.
All Unlimited Bangers and BIG
lorries must use the bottom pits (the first ones you drive into).
Small cars
in the top pits and big cars in the bottom pits will be rigidly enforced to
ensure the smooth running of the meeting. It is far easier to get the smaller wrecks back
up to the top pits than it would be the bigger cars.
Everyone
must park where you are told and park as tightly as possible to the car next to you.
Places
in the pits can not be saved for your mates - If you want to park with your mate
then you must rendezvous before you arrive at the track and then arrive
together.
All scrutineering will take place on the track from 9am to 11.30am,
please get scrutineered as soon as possible and please drive dead slow through
the pits.
All racers will be given two tickets when scrutineered, don't loose
them as you need to hand them over when you go out for your two heats. If you
don't have your ticket to hand over you won't be allowed on the track.
The top 30
or so point scorers from the heats will qualify for the Final. 1st,2nd & 3rd
places in the heats will almost certainly qualify you, 4th, 5th & 6th places
may qualify you but depending on numbers there is no guarantee. For the Final
cars will be lined up two abreast and pole will be decided with an Incarace
style draw.
1st, 2nd & 3rd places in all races (except DD's) will receive
a trophy plus a cash voucher. Prize money can be collected in race control after
4pm. Final winners will also receive a voucher for a Dvd of the days racing from
Westcountry Videos.
Now the nasty bit - you will be loaded up if you turn
round and race the wrong way, jack stationary cars, attack anyone on the centre
of the track or attack anyone by coming off the centre or if you continue to
race/hit after the Red lights/flags. As long as you go the
right way round and stay on the track your OK.
Finally have a great day everyone and remember all our meetings through the season have plenty of action. Check our dates on the back of your race day programmes or Here and pay us another visit ---- Everyone's welcome ----
---- Keith ----

Many thanks to the Steamer for this preview of the booked in racers.
HMC
PREVIEW - Updated
December 27th, final update.
The Heavy Metal Classic is traditionally the biggest event on the calendar with a record breaking 266 cars present in 2005, a British record. With just over a fortnight to go at the time of writing, the meeting is now fully booked. When you take a step back and look at it objectively, the fact that a small independent promotion can attract 300+ cars from all over the nation to a meeting is nothing short of amazing and many promoters would kill to have the logistical problems that this situation poses. Helpfully over 20 drivers are intending to race in both classes, which will at least mean that there are less than 300 wagons in attendance!!! In addition to the local entry there are drivers from Spedeworth, TSR, RDC, Fleet, Incarace, Mendips, Grimley, SAA, Autospeed, Mendips, PRI, Marshfield, Buxton and as usual the Isle of Wight on the list with plenty of material slated for destruction to boot. Looking at the 1800cc class first, there are A60s, Minxes, Victors, Mk3 Cortinas, Volvo 144s, A40s, a Wolseley 1500, Datsun 180B, Mk2 Cortina, A35, Sceptre and a Viva on the list as well as a smattering of hardcore motors in the shape of a Maxi, Avenger and Mk2 Escort!!! Without further ado let’s have a look at who has put their name on the list.
The
local entry is headed by defending champion 54 Winnie, a Spedeworth veteran from
the Aldershot days who is usually in the top 3 at the title events. He won the
unlimited Summer Open here at the end of June too and has won the points title
at the lake more times than anyone else I believe. He even ventured to Fleet
last year for the old boys bash and starts as favourite to win the title again
in my eyes. He might even hit something en route if you’re lucky!
The
Devils support every meeting here at the lake and points champion 575 Tritt
heads their entry this year. Like Winnie, he is another veteran racer who cut
his teeth here with the Warriors outfit and has won the points title before.
Another good bet for the title, he will be ably assisted by team mates 576 Simon
Hadland, 578 Bert (another former
points champion) and 606 Boomer, who is of course the son of veteran Reef.
Other
notables on the list include 2 Jon B, who has risen through the ranks to become
one of the top drivers in the sport over the last couple of seasons, former
champion 112 Rusty and impressive young gun 85 Little Tricky, the son of Saint
791 Tricky Micky. Pin-up 283 Webby
has booked and will undoubtedly be up there in the best wrecker stakes as have
Gumm boys 104 Lee and 106 Paul plus running mate 105 Slug, Lee of course
impressing with a tidy Granny coupe here at the start of December. 71 Mr Tea and
76 Bam Bam of Team Bedrock fame are also on the list as is veteran 77 Bass, the
latter having raced some splendid machinery here over the years including a Mk1
Consul at this event a couple of years ago. The Dodge Boys have also booked and
as expected their entry includes some impressive machinery with at least one
Farina amongst their ranks as well as a vintage Ford of some description. Others
of note are the legendary 313 Mayhem, who is well on the way to racing his 300th
A60 and running mate 3 Woody, another Northampton veteran who has wrecked some
mindblowing machinery in his time. The Oxford Welshman, 622 Ifor Evans, has also
had some pretty impressive plant over the years while 126 Casey is a rising star
who cut his teeth at Grimley before moving across to the lake a couple of years
ago. 225 Little Bear always seems to attract plenty of attention when he is on
track and may well be one to watch in the future as are the likes of 275 Ozzie
and 290 Armco Andy. Both of these boys have made names for themselves on the
local scene in recent years despite racing on a limited budget. Other names that
catch the eye are Thamesdown veteran 391 Spikey and former Equaliser 456
Grizzly, who still puts in the occasional appearance together with son 457
Aaron.
RDC
are well represented on the list, former champion 186 the Gedster leading the
charge in what will surely be another Nissan Prairie following the success he
had in one at this meeting two years ago, which certainly proved the value of a
good manhole cover! Former British champion 131 Wadey has also put his name down
as have young guns 79 Twelly Jnr, 83 Weeksy, 179 the Leg-End, 229 Ritchie
Holmes, 384 Bad Boy Liam and 485 Fiasco. The former duo are the sons of
Spedeworth veterans 479 Nick and 83 Nigel while Liam is the son of 483 the
Baboon. All 3 men have left their mark on the history of the sport though if you
get chatting to Twelly Snr you would have thought his achievements put Wilko,
Waspy and Lashly to shame! The Leg-End was in my eyes the newcomer of the year
in 2005 with some stunning performances across the land, none more so than his
display at the Skeg 2 litre open in August, which was one of the best one man
shows all season. However, he has a worrying tendency to dress up in women’s
clothing(!), which will certainly get him plenty of attention on track in his
diminutive A35. Predator 479 Dirty Dan is another RDC young gun who has added
his name to the list as has 400 Shinny, which guarantees plenty of heavy action,
normally at the expense of those who have stopped in the wrong place! He knocked
the Death Rattle into dreamland at this event last season yet still maintained
his strict vow of silence after the race. Former showjumper and current Reliant
World champion 143 Screamer completes the RDC entry, which is good to see as he
got fenced very early on his lake debut last season. He’s not used to hitting
the fences!!!
Current
UK Open champion 202 Kilf heads the Spedeworth entry and he plans to be at the
wheel of an A40, which will undoubtedly be immaculately turned out as was the
example that 409 Fatboy Slim had at this event two years ago. He is back again
this year as is brother 890 Bazza, the current Crasharama champion. 964 Nath,
running mate of Kilf promises more tin with a Viva estate while other drivers of
note include former English champion264 Wellard, sidekick 299 Huxley and 322
Twigo, the son of legend 122 Sticko. Former Joker 292 Spencer Wakefield,
impressive young gun 395 the West Howe Warrior and 270 Jobie have booked, the
latter in what will surely be his Hednesford Pre-68 motor. Fellow Ringwood based
young gun 417 Bulldog is also down as are 67 Matty, 269 Rob the Roof and 523
Swampy, the latter duo well known for racing some smart material and Swampy
looks set to uphold this reputation with a Mk3 Cortina slated for action. From
Spedeworth East Anglia meanwhile, the Damage Inc duo of 247 Lee Clarke and 741
Captain Damage have booked as have father and son duo 530 Steve and 730 Deane
Mayes. The former is of course a veteran saloon pilot while son Deane had the
honour of leading the Spedeworth World final for some time last season on his
debut before being overhauled by eventual winner Shane Davies. Former London
Open champion 387 Foey, the son of Kinson Cowboy 387 Black Bob heads the Hotshot
entry backed by veterans 465 Pete the Heat and running mate 515 Willie Irvine,
who used to race in the KB Autos colours. 201 the Rev, a man who has been racing
for over 30 years and fellow long serving Dodge Boy 198 Pete Boy are also
scheduled to take part as is 244 Baby Bunny. He will need no introduction to
most people reading this having cut his teeth at the lake a decade ago so he
won’t be getting one!!!
From
Incarace, 68 the Pink Panther and 70 the Needle have their names down, the
former of course a direct descendent of legendary PRI team the Hired Killers as
he never fails to remind us! The latter meanwhile is one of the best wreckers in
the sport at present having upheld the name of the Crash Company in the last
couple of years. 252 Wibbsy aka the Nob from the Mob is scheduled to bring his
inimitable brand of lunacy to the lake. It’s always baffled me how one so mad
gets his musical kicks from the plain and safe adult rock of Phil Collins but I
guess there’s no accounting for taste!!! Veteran 272 Gazza is slated for
action; this guy lives and breathes the sport having battled more injuries in
the last 10 years than most people endure in a lifetime and I wouldn’t mind
betting he will be tooled up to boot. Elite young gun 820 Maggot and 969 Mr
Pickup complete the Bovril drinking entry, the latter of course sporting one of
the coolest surnames in the sport since Bristol star Ricky Headon.
SAA
(Horndean) have Simple 397 the Chief and Full Monty duo 78 Shaggy Shaun and 691
Jason Gubbey down while Wallies 114 Lakey, 396 Scott Mowlam and 418 Ben Edwards
head the Mendips entry. Scott won the points championship last season at his
home circuit after shaving off his comedy perm(!) while Ben shot to fame at the
Thunderbolt after walking away from the biggest 300C wreck to date. Weston Boy
83 Simon Carpenter is also down as is lone Allsort 363 Trummer, another man who
has caught the eye this season with a succession of superbly turned-out cars. 33
Murf is the lone Grimley star and he has booked with a Mk3 Cortina, which may
appear in Demons, Real Steel or Green Team livery given his guest appearances in
the last year or so! The Fleet entry is headed by the legendary 260 Mr Mag, the
man who in my eyes has done more for the sport than anybody else in history
though of course he won’t have any of it. This will be his first meeting since
breaking two ribs at his home circuit early in December and as usual, you
won’t know whether or not he’s bringing something rated until the day. 40
Squeeky, 310 Scary and 36 Shaft are other stars from the Hampshire circuit, the
latter having bounced back from that massive smash at the London Open last
season in which he smashed his pelvis. Finally, 180 Fatal is looking to make his
HMC debut and may well be tooled up having raced a Marina camper and a couple of
Hunters on home turf during the last year. The Islanders have supported this
meeting for years and the vast majority are back again. 155 Rob Phillips, 222
Tom Oatley, 727 Simon Young, 268 Gavin Barnett, 759 Jim Craddock and 202 Barbie
are all set to return. Between them they have once again amassed an impressive
array of machinery; you may recall that the latter had the bright pink 4R at
this meeting a couple of years ago.
From
Pasty land former Farm Boy 668 Dan Fitton and material specialist 838 Tilly have
put their names down, the latter having impressed with a Caddy at the Smeatharpe
Crasharama bash last season. 96 Tank has also got his name down and should
impress with a Volvo 144, a far cry from the Dolomites that are so close to his
heart(!) while former 1800cc Cornish champions 83 Bubbs and 406 Chris Bridger
are also set to appear. Bubbs has raced some beautiful machinery over the last
couple of years while Chris more than proved himself at the Blockbusta with a
superb follow-in on Real Steel man 711 Taz after accusations of rodding. From
even further west, there are about ten Taffs from the Marshfield dirt circuit
booked, including the Tucker brothers, one of whom (502 Jimmy) impressed with a
Mk2 Cortina at the Mendips team bash last July. It would be nice to see more of
these boys on the national scene as Wales badly needs a star to replace 918 the
Bucking Fastard, who many of you reading this will recall.
The
Common Crushers intend to make their debut at the lake after a fine 2005 season,
which saw them feature on the national scene for the first time on the back of
some impressive performances at Coventry. 99 Goffy and 2000cc World Dirt
champion 742 Ian Gregory are joined by 73 One Lap, 96 Hibbo, 361 Rob Milner, 662
Bob Rose and 711 Darren Weeks, all of whom are now TSR licensed following the
Startrax takeover of Brampton last season. 391 Ol Matey and brother 491 Paul
Shinn are also on the list now, they of course the outspoken duo of the Shinn
brothers!!! Both men have impressed last season, the former at this meeting
while Paul put it about in some style at Brampton’s team bash though sadly we
don’t see enough of him. Former Wasp 443 Harvey Wallbanger is seemingly the
last Rebel these days while team Black young gun 385 Little Boy completes the
TSR entry in this class.
PRI
young gun 264 Boonie is set to make his debut alongside new Midnight Runner
signing 399 Phil Cullen (son of Pete Boy) and the underrated 471 Oakey while
from Buxton 233 Top Banana intends to impress having booked in with a 16/60.

Looking
at the unlimited class, Winnie once again heads the local entry with Bricknell,
Steve Hart, Bass, the Gumm boys, Rusty, Little Bear, Wild Willy, Ozzie, Tritt,
Bert, Jambo and Little Tricky also looking to contest both classes. Hart, son of
veteran Carly follows up last year’s Silver Shadow with an XJ40, which will
hopefully sport a slightly smaller rollcage(!) and 110 Yo Yo Man, veteran of
over 100 consecutive Standlake meetings is of course present and correct. 417
Shelly has elected to run in the unlimited class this year at the wheel of an
export money Peugeot 504 to follow up last year’s immaculate Mk1 Cortina. 328
Stuart Morse returns and as befits his material reputation plans to race a
Lincoln limo, which will be the biggest car ever raced at the lake to my
knowledge with other impressive machinery pledged by 253 Bungee who has a Caddy
and veteran 657 Paul Scriver who has a Lincoln Continental put aside. Bass has
booked with a DS420 no less and Paul Gumm is scheduled to be at the wheel of an
Oldsmobile. 124 Oris might well have aspirations of taking the title in a
Granny, while 133 Karly will presumably have wrecking in mind if he is XJ
mounted as promised. 273 Erny has been a revelation at this meeting in the last
couple of years with stunning performances in both a P5 and DS420 while 515
Timmy Aldridge is another rising star who may well be one of the top drivers in
the UK in a few years time. The Real Steel boys are set to appear as usual, 737
Crash promising yet another Roller and the Howell brothers are looking to
impress on the material front too. 851 Bode has booked with a Granny limo (their
current road car?) with Jay in an Aunty. 323 Tufty meanwhile plans to wreck yet
another P5, the former Spedeworth star having already destroyed a number of real
Rovers over the past season here as well as an impressive Ponton Merc. Others of
note include the Spiers boys who used to race as the New Sweeney, impressive
young gun 207 Compo, occasional racers the Teakels who plan to impress on the
material front and 32 Podge who turned out a DS420 hearse here at this event a
couple of years ago though from memory he forgot to paint it!!! Former Blitz Boy
137 Spanner has his name down as do 143 Chicken Man and 177 Matt Whitehead, the
latter something of an unsung hero having represented the lake at Hednesford
Pre-68s and Blockbusters past. 491 Neil Sparkes, the perenially unlucky 415
Richard Berlin and lone Vigilante 911 Darren Saveall complete the local entry.
Spedeworth
are also well represented in this class with Kilf, Bunny, Wellard and Nath once
again in action along with multi-champion 348 Mushy. Young gun 241 Liam Cracknell, the son of Colour Purple star
431 Daryl is also slated to appear as is 614 Mr Lossy, who follows up last
year’s smart Minster with a stretched Lincoln, which will almost certainly be
the one that went straight in at the Firecracker. 1 Dave Thomas, the son of 1977
Spedeworth World champ 11 Terry, has booked following an impressive meeting in a
rough SD1 at the Ringwood UK Open with big hitter 159 Rubble also on the list
now. He’ll undoubtedly spoil somebody’s day. Speaking of which, 186 Mike
Pullen is another young gun who has a reputation for putting the bumper in with
running mate 187 Fender Bender likely to impress on the material front having
raced an Armstrong Siddeley amongst other tackle in the past year or so.
Brothers 288 Kevin and 408 Danny Sherwood join the list too, the former having
raced a simply jawdropping 280C at the Ringwood UK Open in 2004. 205 Chunky will
be tooled up for sure as he plans to return his unusual Holden Monaro, which
first saw action at the Firecracker and 800 Rob Hayes is the lone Bruiser
booked. Former Ringwood UK Open champion 4 Wildy and the legendary 206 Kingy,
who has won the Arlington championship more times than anybody else in history,
have also put their names down. Speaking of big names, they don’t come much
bigger than former Spedeworth World champion 46 Maverick, another man who cut
his teeth here at the lake before hitting the big time. 25 Tombo is another who
learnt his craft here at the lake before moving onto bigger things at Spedeworth,
though a major title still eludes him after 20 years of racing. 439 Danny
Sutton, the son of Yarmouth veteran Pusher Paul returns following his display in
a used Westy a couple of years ago with lone Blooz Boy 103 Lee Bugler also back
for a play having raced at the lake a number of times in the past.
From
RDC, the Leg-End and 229 Ritchie Holmes plan to race in this class as well as
the under 1800cc equivalent with the very impressive 19 Dove Toe Joe set to make
his Standlake debut in a Camaro, which may well be his Coventry Masters car. 33!
the Legend loves it here at the lake, the former English champion of course
having a rake of material to choose from though I hear whisper the Caddy flower
car may be heading here following its showing at both Ipswich and Kings Lynn in
the latter months of 2005. Another man set to make his first appearance at the
lake is 39 Peanut, a veteran of the Spedeworth raceways who is now RDC licensed.
He has made a name for himself in recent years with a succession of DS420 limos
although you can expect a regular XJ this time. One thing is certain- he won’t
break his kneecaps on the dash!!! 274 Giggler joins the party in what else but a
Volvo, the former Hitman unlikely to get far but his attitude alone marks him
out as one of the sport’s unsung heroes. 879 Wrecked Reg, the man with the
biggest hands in banger racing has now added his name to the list and intends to
race one of his favoured Volvo 240s.
From
Bovril land, the Needle intends to compete in this class too and he is joined by
827 Nogger. He has raced some nice motors here in the past and pulled out all
the stops on his Coventry Masters Mk1, which was sex itself. Unlikely to
complete many laps, you can expect him to spend the rest of the day roaming the
terraces with a staplegun in an attempt to thwart photographer Alex Catley’s
chances of fatherhood later in life!!! 6 the Good Lord plans to be XJ powered, a
man about whom we need say no more as he is quite simply one of the best drivers
ever to set foot in a banger having won just about every championship there is
including the Spedeworth World a decade ago. 303 Dangerous Brian has now
indicated his intention to race and as usual he plans to be tooled up with a Mk2
Jag at his disposal with fellow material man 5 Mad Rath set to destroy an FX4.
Former World Figure of 8 champion 218 Lee Clelland completes an impressive
Incarace entry in this class.
Fleet
visitors include Mr Mag once again and 35 Bug, the son of Mr Spin who may well
return his P5 from the Big Bang event here in November. 31 Bumble had an
immaculate Volvo 144 for this meeting last year and 479 Del Boy has a Granny
limo for the occasion. PRI are represented by 165 Bubs, 169 Lenny Brinkley and
384 Goldie. Brinkley enjoyed the meeting of his life recently with a heat and
Allcomers win at the Firecracker while Jools Holland lookalike 384 Goldie
intends to be at the wheel of one of his favoured 280Cs. The Autospeed entry is
headed by former Blockbuster champ 100 Sat with 159 Brains and 905 Jason Ross
also on the list. The former is a Layhams man who moved down west a couple of
years ago while the latter is the son of veteran 271 Phil and in my eyes is a
hot prospect for 2006. 127 Bungle, 157 Noddy and 266 Tiggy are all material men
of some repute, the latter in particular renowned for turning out some stunning
machinery, which is normally scrap by the end of the first lap(!) while Noddy
impressed at the Smeatharpe Crasharama event last season with a superb display
in a Caddy. Bungle has a Princess hearse earmarked for the meeting- let’s hope
that’s of the A135 variety rather than a Wedge while Tiggy intends to return
his Crasharama Super Snipe hearse. New Autospeed licensee 117 Chinny has
earmarked a Granny limo for the occasion, which will surely be the model he
turned out at the Ringwood UK Open while star of Strictly Come Dancing Darren
Gough, sorry 172 Bernie has now added his name to the list. He may well have a
vintage Italian motor set aside.
Lone
Islander in the unlimited class is 333 Tony Cotton who has a Mk10 Jag for the
occasion and 169 Jason Thompson is the only Bear on the list, the Smallfield
star a regular visitor to the lake in the closed season. He is joined 89 John
Harber, 134 Toady and 737 Elliot Finnie, who are better known as the Cowboys.
They all look set to return their motors from Arlington Gala night. 617 Jack
Overy has also indicated his intention to race following a number of recent lake
appearances in the wake of his ORC ban, the TSR man of course being one of the
top names in the sport with a string of titles to his credit. Former PRI World
champion 998 Cotty has now added his name as have running mates 209 Gary
Haresign and 321 Andy Newton.
Stinkbridge
men 450 Glyn Platts, 451 Willy Blackwell and 455 Rick Finney return to the lake
following their impressive showing at the 3 Litre meeting back in February and
Mendips men 9 Mavis, 315 Jason Ayles and 402 Filo are slated to appear too.
Ayles is the current Pre-68 champion having taken the title in a rather sexy
Austin 3 Litre (even if it was on the slush) while Filo is in my eyes a highly
underrated driver who has been about a bit though he does have a rather worrying
love of Cavaliers!!! Grimley stars in this class are 3 Stumpy who we haven’t
seen for a while and 122 Tiddy, a veteran who raced at the World 8 over a decade
ago at the wheel of a Camaro. Buxton man 601 Usha completes the entry, the son
of Incarace veteran 01 Tony very much a contact man who impressed at the
Spedeworth World recently in a Granny limo.
