The pits at Standlake were once again packed to capacity on January 7 as the Oxford based promotion staged the annual Heavy Metal Classic for 1800cc and unlimited bangers. With a great deal of wet weather in the weeks leading up to the fixture the promotion decided to restrict the bookings to 250 cars (as the surplus pit area had been heavily flooded) and ultimately just shy of 200 cars assembled for action with 110 for the 1800cc class which is where we will start. As you can see from the attached Mental Metal list there was plenty of vintage with 260 Keefy’s ultra rare and hanging Taunus the star mount although 101 Michael Forrest’s Mayflower was another rated find. Elsewhere 177 Matt Williams wielded an HC Viva, 333 Tony Cotton had a Volvo 145 estate and 811 John Wheeler an unpainted Triumph Dolomite. Other RWD interest included a Stellar from 167 Kevin West, 82 Nathan Grant had a RWD Bluebird estate, there were three Capris plus five Cortinas topped by the Mk3 estate of 39 Steve Moore.

The opener was for the classics and a limited amount of RWD machinery and raised around 25 cars. Cotton began a lively display by running Keefy in before he buried the smart Cortina of 129 Kevin Gasser while 222 Tom Oatley fired his rated Oxford into the well presented Cortina of 333 Chris Golding. 419 Dave Murphy then hammered Oatley in turn as Cotton featured again with a T-bone on Wheeler before another of the Isle of Wight contingent starred with 727 Simon Young stuffing both 899 Andy Dodge and Oatley, the latter recovering to join forces with Young and put away 888 Chris Crowshaw (Cortina). The race came to an early end when 25 Tombo rolled the impressive Cotton with 537 Mad Mitch declared the winner from the early Accord of 57 James Reeve and 815 Ian Castle (Alpine).

A mixture of Bluebirds and Primeras for the second heat and a slightly bigger field with 791 Aaron Rowland (Primera) putting away the similar mount of 575 Paul Tritton although the former would soon fall foul of 155 Robert Phillips in a move which also claimed 817 Steve Argrave. 384 Liam Conway then dished out a roof bending blitz to 102 Clayton Wheeler but the former was followed in seconds later by 543 Keith Iggo. 294 Steve Martindale then ran in Phillips as Conway evened the score on Iggo with a follow-in of his own allowing 38 Darren Ruby to blow up the latter. Ruby continued by running in 211 Ashley Edwards but soon found himself on the wrong end of a wicked follow-in from 525 Wes Starmer which snapped the Autospeed man’s motor big time. 741 Luke Parfitt won from 126 Dave Case and 387 Bobby LeFeaux as a shaken Ruby was helped from his motor.

It was a mixture of cars for the next two heats with just over 20 cars for heat three which began with 60 Dan Waite blasting 611 Gavin Harris as 909 Jamie Duff, in the lone Riva estate, T-boned 40 Greg Ward (Proton) and a pile-up formed on the back straight. 709 Colin Duff put away 48 James Waite (Cavalier) as 435 Andy Cooper (Sunny) ran 184 Andy Nutley (Prairie) round the wall. 344 Mark Goodhall (Mazda 323F) then buried Colin Duff well as 479 Darren Sherlock (Carina) nailed Waite only to be buried by 928 Richard Steele (Cavalier) seconds later, the latter finishing second behind the rapid Acclaim of 426 Paul Horwood. 2 Jonathan Bricknell (Prairie) was third.

Nearly 30 for the fourth heat which again saw the clutch start result in a first bend pile-up allowing 277 Sean Rowell to run 188 Steve Bennett and 9 Adam Eilas into 817 Richard Hands as 214 Lee Vincent followed in the smart Sierra of 204 Charlie Callard before repeating the move on 07 Kevin Williams’ 16/60. This allowed Rowell to hammer Vincent with the former taking one from 873 Simon Wincote (Mondeo) in turn with 225 Charlie Barrett (Lancer) completing the train before the reds came out to assist a shaken driver in the heap. 311 Danny Smithson blasted Vincent just as a reds came out while a quiet restart saw 552 Steve Bugler bury 486 Bobby Pooley (Carina) as 730 Dean Mayes (Cavalier) won from the similar mount of 396 Scott Mowlem and Smithson.

The classics returned for heat five with 320 Paul Seymour firing into Forrest before the former came under attack from 178 Kevin Willams as Forrest rolled spectacularly along the fence on the home straight. The reds came out and despite damaging his roof in the crash Forrest exited ok and we resumed with Cotton and Oatley hammering Gasser before the former was buried by 298 Steve Henty and Cotton stuck it to Wheeler. Reeves won this time ahead of Mad Mitch with Young third.

Not quite 20 for the sixth heat which started quietly although not for Starmer who was followed in hard by 908 Dave Brown before 702 James Dodge (Carina) nailed Harris. Towards the end of the race 702 Jimbo again stuck it to Harris with a solid hit only to take one in turn from 361 Chris Walden as 741 Capt D took his second win from 197 Pete Dodge (Primera) and 294 Trigger.

A better field of around 25 contested the penultimate heat with 254 Steve Ryan stuffing 580 Dave Tustian (Sunny) into another first bend pile-up as 247 Lee Clarke (Cavalier) hit 790 Ryan Rowland on the nose. 580 Dippy Dave came back to hammer Waite while 247 Bro put away Jamie Duff and Grant turned round to meet 759 Chris Oldcorn (Sunny) on the nose, Ryan moving in to sandwich the Leveller. Elsewhere Sherlock blasted 591 Marc Blower (Primera estate) and Bro put away Goodhall but had to settle for second behind the rapid Sunny of 80 Matt Nutley with 589 Dean Plowman (Proton) third.

Back to the 20 car mark for the last heat with 210 Paul Barnes burying Vincent early doors as 146 Dan Wigman blasted Golding while Vincent bounced back to follow-in 167 Westy before he met Callard on the nose. Jimbo then followed in 171 James Simpson’s Capri a treat and followed that up with a similar move on 146 Wiggy as 730 Deano completed his double with 791 Little Tricky and Wiggy next.

Just over 30 for the qualifiers only final which was surprisingly lively. Ryan buried Peter Dodge early on and Wiggy did the same to Castle (now in his second car-a Rover 214). Trigger then put away Reeves as Ryan walled Andy Dodge’s bubble while Peter Dodge came back to thunder in Trigger and a recovered Reeves followed Steele in. Bricknell then planted both 787 Les Dee (Primera) and Barnes into Little Tricky while Plowman took care of both LeFeaux and Reeves. Meanwhile the leading Deano was buried by Jimbo and so Capt D completed a hat trick with 516 Carl Gould (Cavalier) and a recovered Deano completing a Legs and Co clean sweep.

Just shy of 50 cars returned for the Allcomers which was mayhem from the off and once again saw a pile-up form on the top bend. Little Tricky buried Smithson as Young hammered 126 Dave Case with a recovered Smithson blasting Young in turn. Phillips scored on 43 Ben Reeder with the former then taking a fine follow-in from Cooper. 264 Mark Welland blasted the latter in turn and Grant nailed the Spedeworth man seconds later. Colin Duff then scored on Seymour as Blower blasted Ryan and Smithson followed Jimbo into the wreckage on the top bend. Vincent hammered 890 Barry Collins’ Capri as Mowlam came through for the win ahead of Vincent and Pete Dodge.

A decent field of around 20 repaired for the demo. 610 Steve Roberts (Cavalier) got things going with a shot on Crowshaw as Capt D hammered 07 Williams and 830 Christian Finch (Primera) blasted Peter Dodge before meeting Grant on the nose. Starmer then ran in 53 Matt Wilsher (Primera) as Grant took a payback T-bone from Finch and Trigger nailed Peter Dodge. Capt D then ran in 790 Little Dodgy hard as Finch blasted Roberts only for the Wally to become Capt D’s latest follow-in victim. Reeves blasted 126 Casey as Dippy Dave gave Roberts more abuse and Capt D stuck it to Pete Dodge with two big hits on consecutive laps. The Legs and Co man then belted Clayton Wheeler on the nose with 80 Nutspeed hammering the latter but the SID pilot shrugged it off to repay Capt D. Starman then hammered Nutspeed with Clayton Wheeler delivering a T-bone to the latter only to be hammered by Starmer in turn. Nutspeed and Wheeler then met on the nose with Starmer blasting the former to take the win. However Wheeler then got it running with Starmer taking a length of the straight run up to blitz him in style.

Onto the unlimited class which raised a fine field of around 85 cars with a stunning selection of material on offer as listed above. Other cars worthy of a mention was the Mercedes 230 estate of 84 Tom Harris, 283 Bryan Webb’s used Mk1 Granada and the smart Laurel of Real Steel pilot 888 Martin Haycock.

Much like the 1800cc class the first heat was purely for the material with just 16 cars for it. 383 Dodger attacked 547 Mr V although the latter shrugged it off to assault 18 Gate Crasher before 283 Webby walled 851 Bode. A rated finish saw 395 the West Howe Warrior follow in Gate Crasher a treat only for 707 Mark Court to land a wicked blitz on the former’s Westy with 731 Shaun Dyer completing the train as Webby guided his Mk1 to the win ahead of 296 Terry Barber’s series one XJ and Dyer.

Just over 20 for the second heat with the first bend pile-up claiming several as 46 Cliff Friend buried 186 Alex Daniels’ Volvo 740 estate only to then take one from 1 Dave Thomas in turn as 514 Marty Eighteen (Volvo 240 estate) nailed 25 Terry Boxall on the nose. Lone Bear 169 Jason Thompson (Volvo 240) blasted the smart Granada of 310 Steve Bund before 384 John Golden assaulted 528 Alan Hunt, first walling him and then delivering a head-on as 348 Sonny Sherwood motored to the win ahead of 54 Alan Cartwright (XJ) and 617 Jack Overy.

A similar field contested heat three with 33! the Legend using his Caddy to hammer 127 Pete Wake (Volvo 240 estate) only to take some Real Steel pay back from 737 Crash who went on to blast 399 Pete Cullen. 264 Wellard managed to bury Crash’s Roller before Bricknell (Volvo 240 estate) gave the luckless Cullen a big hit before the Legend fired into 110 Derek Tyler (Volvo 240 estate). Sadly the latter had just unbelted and was shaken by the impact bringing the race to an early end with 202 Mike Kilford declared the winner from 814 Mark Barker and Bricknell.

22 starters for the fourth heat with 273 Stuart Emery (Omega) planted 24 Jason Cuddihy into 622 Ifor Evans before 67 Rickie Beasley (Volvo 740 estate) treated the spun 998 Wayne Cotterill to a head-on. 377 Ashley Tompkins (Volvo 740) walled 509 Les Dolan’s limo before 785 Jambo ran in 771 Paul Thomas well while 99 Ritchie Ahern opened his account by taking the win from 153 Richard Martin and 273 Erny.

Around 20 again for heat five which included most of the material from the opener. Dyer was the first to show burying Eighteen as Thompson landed a T-bone on 57 Harry Rawlins before Dyer again stuck it to Eighteen. 528 Jethro then walled the Legend’s P5 and kept hold off his man to repeat the move half a lap later, this time with Webby offering an assist. The latter then hit Rawlins which allowed the Legend to ram the latter head-on. 99 the Cheat took another win with stable mates 271 Dean Goodall and Overy next.

A better field of 26 assembled for heat six which saw 383 Dodger instantly resume his feud with the Real Steel as he fired into 701 Taz who held his attacker up for Haycock to weigh in. 42 Messer buried 879 Wrecked Reg (Volvo 240) as 83 Andy Beaven (XJ) scored on 107 David Joyner (Volvo 740 estate) with the latter then getting followed in by 379 Danny Evans (Volvo 740 estate). Dodger again hammered Taz with Thompson duly piling into the latter to waste the P5 as Dodger repaid the favour on Haycock. Thompson meanwhile met 90 Mark Bartlett (XJ) in a solid head-on as Crash pounded Tompkins with Dodger burying the latter in turn. Martin took the win ahead of 517 Scott Weldon (XJ) and Thomas.

A similar field contested the final heat with 363 Sam Trim (XJ) burying 24 Stinky as the Cheat fenced Irish guest 777 James Connolly and the Legend powered his Fleetwood head-on into Friend. 123 Robbie Phennah (Volvo 240 estate) then planted Bund into 894 Marc Almedia as 363 Trummer ran 384 Goldie through the back of the Legend and Messer stuffed 402 Phil Cleverly (Volvo 240). The Cheat meanwhile continued his winning ways with his third victory with side kicks Overy and 82 Wayne Quinn next.

Just under 25 qualifiers returned for the final with 82 Quinny getting stuffed by Daniels from the off, the latter then attacking 407 Nigel Gissing (Volvo 240) as Jethro nailed Martin. Dyer then fired into Teakle’s rated Daimler as Welland ran in Thomas leaving the latter prone to further abuse from Teakle and 54 Winnie. Up front the Cheat reeled in running mate 271 Deano and shoved him wide on the last bend to complete a clean sweep with Overy taking third.

A bumper field of around 40 returned for the Allcomers with a titanic pile-up forming on the top bend from the word go in which Cullen gave Bode a big head-on, the impact jacking the Rover impressively against the wreckage behind him. Bund then nailed the Midnight Runner but was decimated in turn by a storming blitz from  Erny with Jambo nailing the Omega in turn before the reds came to clear the blockage. The race resumed with 24 Andy Waters (Volvo 240 estate) scoring on Cullen although Runner revenge was swift thanks to Rawlins with Jethro then sticking it to the Autospeed man before he buried 402 Filo as well. 295 Dean Barber (Volvo 240 estate) treated 83 Bubbs to a head-on as Rawlins had a pop at Messer on opposite and Webby blasted the luckless Waters. Erny then stuffed Rawlins as Overy led team mate Goldie and Webby to the flag.

Just over a dozen returned for the demo with nearly half the field coming from the Real Steel camp. Almost immediately 739 No Mates came on opposite and lunged inside out at Jethro but mercifully missed his target and hit the pit gate instead. Elsewhere Daniels attacked Crash only to take one from Rawlins in turn while Jethro fired up the back of No Mates. However this prompted the latter to complete nearly a lap against the flow before he again came inside out, this time striking the drivers side of Daniels’ Volvo very hard. The reds came out to check on Daniels who mercifully was ok despite the hit with the Real Steel rollers excluded from the restart and later it was announced both Crash and No Mates had been indefinitely banned from the track. The demo was eventually resumed with Jethro claiming the win after outlasting Beasley.

An unfortunate end to what had been a decent and entertaining day on the whole despite the slippery conditions although the promotion was very lucky that the forecast rain held off for most of the day. Perhaps next year we could see less but better subscribed heats which could see more action and maybe the racing would benefit from rolling starts instead of clutch starts which often saw first bend pile-ups eliminate many of the starters.
