Standlake 8th January 2006 - Heavy Metal Classic Under 1800cc       Report By Edd Anderson

The Heavy Metal Classic once again had loads of cars with visitors from all over the country. The field was Bluebird dominated althoughh there were plenty of nice motors to whet the appitite. The RWD entry included Cortina's and Capris, the top Cortina's were the Mk4 and Mk3 of 202 Kelly Wetherick and 252 John Wibberly respectively. The only Japanese entry of note was 99 Scott Goughs' Datson 180B. The most hardcore motors on show were the unpainted Wedge of 582 Steven Tustian, 222 Tom Oatleys' Avenger with a racing stripe and 68 Clive Scott's Maxi. Result: 247 Lee Clarke, 303 Jason Oliver, 264 mark Welland, 384 Liam Conway, 117 Stephen Ellis, 31 Craig Hawkins

Heat 8 - The penultimate heat was a lot quieter although 491 Paul Shinn (Primera) did a huge follow in on 360 John Bing, and the 360 car ended up on the other side of the track because the hit was so hard, and there was a bit of a pile up at the top bend. 485 Justin Nicholls took the win from 576 Simon Hadland and 104 Lee Gumm.

Result: 264 Mark Welland from 490 Matt Sole

An excellent meeting, I don't think any other promoter could cope with that amount of cars and the 1st 10 races being over and done with in 2 hours shows how good the organization was. Definitely worth going back there in the 19th Feb for more of the same and hopefully better weather.

Standlake 8th January 2006 - Heavy Metal Classic Over 1800cc       Report By Al Oxby

The 2006 Heavy Metal Classic witnessed a true renaissance for the larger class with the entry of 114 cars being more than one-third greater than the showing at HMC 2005.  As ever, the entry was highly varied with drivers coming from Autospeed, Cheetahs, Fleet, GMP, Grimley, Incarace, Mendips, PRI, RDC, Smallfield, Spedeworth, TSR and the CRASH organisation on the Isle of Wight as well as a strong local showing.  The material was also as varied as the list of driver’s home tracks with the used Rover tin numbering 3 being a P5 saloon from 402 Phil Cleverly, a P5B from 25 Mark Thomas whilst 134 Scott Hanby returned a P5B Coupe.  Amongst the used Granadas were Mk2 Limos from 42 Scott Ivins and 117 Mark Longley and a Coupe from 104 Lee Gumm whilst three Mk10 Jags returned in the hands of 333 Tony Cotton, 592 Mark Marchant and 737 Elliott Finnie.  737 Ian Crandon fetched back his Rolls Royce Silver Cloud for another meeting and the returnees list was topped off by a large pile of machinery from across the Atlantic being the Chevrolet Camaros of 19 Joe Mullarkey and 888 Donny Lane, 33 Simon Reed’s Cadillac Fleetwood Flower Car, the Lincoln Town Car Limo of 614 Chris Hide and the beefy sounding Yank (answers on a postcard please!) of 22 Andy Tidmarsh.

Moving onto the fresh material, the more modern stuff included a Mk3 Granada Limo for 701 Kevin Major, a rapid Mk2 Hearse from 157 Martin Roberts, a wedge Princess Hearse for 127 Peter Wake and Toyota Crowns for 617 Jack Overy and 869 Davey Peskett.  Moving backwards in time, 9 Adam Elias produced a rarely seen Vauxhall Viceroy and there was more from Vauxhall in the shape of an FE Ventora from 731 Shaun Dyer.  5 Wayne Rathbone turned up tooled up with an FX4 Taxi, 851 Mark Howell produced a Mk1 Granada Limo and 417 Sheldon Gardiner dared to be different with a Peugeot 505.  More daring was displayed by 260 Keith Reynolds although this was mainly due to the amazingly rotten state of his Jenson Interceptor and regular material man 303 Brian Cope provided the only classic Jag of the day with his Mk2.  Fresh Rovers were the P5B of 323 Steve Anderson and a pair of P4s from 852 Jamie Howell and 15 Neil Teakle but the best of the British tin had to be the seriously early A Series Vauxhall Cresta from 32 Mark Walker which managed to look as if it was on its last legs in the pits but then came to life out on the track.  Finally we look at the fresh American offerings and there were plenty of them including a Chevrolet Camaro from 82 Nathan Grant and a pair of Caddy Sevilles from 253 Ben Hunt and 406 Mark Gissing.  657 Paul Scriver produced a Lincoln Continental Coupe and local regular 106 Paul Gumm was at the wheel of an Oldsmobile Cutlass.  This left two further Standlake men to produce the biggest cars to have ever debuted at the lake being the excellent Cadillac Fleetwood Limo of 273 Stuart Emery and equally impressive late Lincoln Town Car Limo of 328 Stuart Morse.  With all of that tackle available, it would be easy to overlook the smart cars on display but the ones that stuck in mind were the Jaguar XJ40 of 70 Steven Hart and the very attractive cars of Horndean racers 52 Lee Grace whose Laurel was the only example on show and the delightful Mk2 Granada Estate of 68 Mark Dickson.

Heat 1 - As is now customary at the HMC, the first race was for classic cars, Yanks and hearses and produced a field of 22 starters.  851 Bode started the action with a head-on to the spun Peugeot of 417 Shelly before 82 Grant piled his Camaro in similar style into the Flower Car of 33 The Legend who had also found himself facing the traffic.  134 Toadie then gave Shelly a jacking before 402 Filo hooked out the recovering 33 Reed and then 303 Dangerous Brian attacked 852 Jay in the P4.  Shelly was still in the running but took more punishment as 731 Dyer weighed into him whilst 737 Crash slowed before a pile at the start of the home straight allowing 888 Lane to fire into him well.  The impact punted Crash forward to meet 25 Tombo on the nose whilst Shelly span out before reaching the heap taking a hefty T-bone from 5 Mad Rath’s Cab as a result.  The numbers were now thinning out but there was still some action to come as Lane continued a good showing by firing into the vintage Vauxhall of 32 Podge which wounded it allowing Mad Rath to dish out a jacking that would prove terminal.  The last couple of laps were quiet allowing us to concentrate on 260 Keefy who drove the Jensen in fine style to the victory.

Result: 260 Keith Reynolds, 117 Mark Longley, 157 Martin Roberts, 731 Shaun Dyer, 888 Donny Lane, 134 Scott Hanby

Heat 2 - was Granadas only and had 30 of them out including an unusual Swedish example from Stinkbridge pilot 51 Simon Heilds!  451 Willy Blackwell span out early and took a shot over the back wheel from 202 Mike Kilford before 68 Dicko fired into 138 Steve James.  This allowed the recovered Blackwell to blast Dicko hard over the back wheel before lone Bear 169 Jason Thompson steamed 787 Les Dee.  Dee was then run into the Armco by the recovered Dicko before 172 Simon Byrne gave the Estate of 450 Glyn Platts a shot over the back wheel as Dee attacked the Stinkbridge man from the other side.  77 Steve Beasley ran 321 Andy Newton in lightly in the late stages whilst 331 Jason Jackson steamed 84 Tom Harris out of the way in his quest to win the race.  However, the delay was enough to allow 99 Ritchie Ahern through for victory.

Result: 99 Richie Ahern, 331 Jason Jackson, 348 Sonny Sherwood, 143 Martin Wilkes, 814 Mark Barker, 471 Kier Spiers

Heat 3 - There were 26 cars in Heat Three which started in style as 879 Reg Reed used his Volvo 240 to follow in the Mk2 of 177 Matt Whitehead.  299 Stuart Young (Mk2 Estate) then gave the bone to the Series 3 Jag of 165 Colin Lambert with 455 Ricky Finney (Mk2) also becoming involved in the shunt which fired up Lambert to blast the Stinkbridge man over the back wheel on the centre.  Elsewhere, 207 John Randall (Series 2 XJ) wound out 869 Peskett before 283 Bryan Webb (Series 3 XJ) latched onto 15 Teakle although the old P4 held the track well and suffered nothing worse than a spin out after Webb had been on it for three-quarters of a lap.  39 Steve Moore motored to a good win in another Series 3 Jag with 90 Mark Bartlett using his similar machine to bury 106 Gumm’s Yank on his way to third spot.

Result: 39 Steve Moore, 190 Steve Bailey, 90 Mark Bartlett, 283 Bryan Webb, 103 Lee Bugler, 207 John Randall

Heat 4 - had 24 cars out and kicked off with some team blundering as 920 Terry Church (Series 3 XJ) wound out the similar machine of his running mate 707 Mark Court.  104 Lee Gumm then blasted Church well before 328 Morse repeated the dose on the luckless Vigilante with Morse then going on to jack the XJ40 of 241 Liam Cracknell with some force.  Further action saw 52 Grace run in the Series 3 Jag of 481 Bernie Spiers before 179 Jamie Phillips (Volvo 240 Estate) buried the Series 3 Jag of 491 Neil Sparkes well and then a pile started to form which 911 Darren Saveall (Series 3 XJ) ran himself into.  74 Steve Ledbury (Volvo 740 Estate) also weighed into 19 Dove Toe Joe in the pile as 124 Carl Korszewski took a local victory in a Mk2.  The rundown lap saw 592 Marchant give the Volvo 240 Estate of 240 Lee Bufton a stiff shot over the back wheel.

Result: 124 Carl Korszewski, 617 Jack Overy, 998 Wayne Cottrill, 71 Ciran Carton, 240 Lee Bufton, 52 Lee Grace

Heat 5 - Just 18 came out for Heat Five and this was after 8 cars emerged for their second outing of the afternoon to make the numbers up!  The race was quieter as a result although 172 Bernie blasted 84 Harris only to take a revenge jacking from 77 Bass before 6 Mark Holdsworth (Series 2 XJ) buried the Continental Coupe of 657 Scriver.  Harris took more damage and found his roofline further elevated by a shot from the Mk2 Estate of 45 Anthony Crowshaw but somehow the prop held on so that at least Harris recorded a finish.  920 James Medley took the victory in another Series 3 Jag before 42 Messer ran Harris into Scriver’s dead car on the rundown lap.

Result: 920 James Medley, 3 Darren Anslow, 185 Stan Yaxley, 136 Paddy Connelly, 315 Jason Ayles, 42 Scott Ivins

Heat 6 - By the time the second round of heats was run, conditions were considerably wetter than at the start of the meeting but this actually helped to clear the track of slippery materials dragged onto the track from the pits and the action and speeds were much improved as a result.  Heat Six saw 25 cars back out and it all kicked off with 879 Wrecked Reg attacking 481 Spiers before 33 The Legend met Dangerous Brian on the nose although the Flower Car was then collected in the front wheel ripping a wheel off to end its day.  Perhaps it will be the last we see of the rated machine.  Wrecked Reg went on to score on 283 Lovely Bryan whilst Dangerous Brian amazingly came back to blast Scriver on the nose before 273 Erny used his big Limo to waste the Mk2 Estate of 355 Mark Simmonds with some style.  Erny took a shot from Teakle in turn whilst elsewhere 737 Crash met running mate Scriver on the nose and 206 Dave King (Volvo 240 Estate) weighed into 406 Gissing.  737 Spinnie continued in the Mk10 Jag to weigh into Erny whilst 852 Jay blasted Teakle to give us an all P4 encounter that allowed Gissing to hit Jay.  Bernie was the winner of this one.

Result: 172 Simon Byrne, 206 Dave King, 702 James Dodge, 207 John Randall, 355 Mark Simmonds, 169 Len Brinkley

Heat 7 - was a 26-car affair and produced the wrecking train of the day and some splendid wrecks to boot.  964 Nathan Olden (Mk2 Estate) started it all by burying 240 Bufton well whilst 103 Lee Bugler (Series 2 Jag) attacked the Volvo 740 of 51 Simon Heilds.  The lively 888 Lane then scored on Olden with a big train then going in behind them as 451 Blackwell blew up the Series 3 Jag of 187 Wayne Bessant only to be annihilated in turn by 103 Bugler.  134 Toadie then fired into Bugler to complete the train whilst elsewhere 455 Finney set about the Hearse of 157 Noddy.  This delayed the Autospeed man long enough for Lane to complete another destructive shot on him as Bass ran 920 Church into the wall.  The latter drivers Jag then lit up prompting a slightly early red flag with 202 Kilf the man at the front when the race was declared.

Result: 202 Michael Kilford, 42 Scott Ivins, 77 Mick Harris, 323 Steve Anderson, 785 James Taylor, 252 Steve Bugler

Heat 8 - After the excitement of the previous event, 28 cars didn’t produce anything like as much action in Heat Eight although Mullarkey put the Mk2 Estate of 54 Alan Cartwright in the fence early on.  Other action saw 911 Saveall put 106 Gumm away and Grace fire into the Series 3 XJ of 136 Paddy Connelly before 707 Court fired himself head-on into the empty Mk2 of 138 Steve James in the late stages.  112 Shaun Russell won this one in a Mk2 Estate.

Result: 112 Shaun Russell, 54 Alan Cartwright, 321 Andrew Newton, 702 James Dodge, 70 Steven Hart, 814 Mark Barker

Final - It was qualifiers only for the Final with an Incarace draw being used to determine the first row of the grid for the 30 car race.  From the off, it was apparent that most drivers were chasing the title and the cash but the crowd were nonetheless treated to a brilliant display of flat out Unlimited banger racing.  998 Wayne Cottrill Jnr (Mk2 Estate) held the lead in the early stages but was reeled in steadily by 90 Bartz who then had the leader out a few laps into the event.  There were still a few hits going in as well with 124 Orris blasting 54 Winnie and 348 Sonny Sherwood (Mk2 Estate) firing into the similar machine of 190 Steve Bailey.  Bartz put on one of the best displays of Jaguar driving seen anywhere and pulled away from the rest to win the event with 99 Ritchie Ahern (Mk2) coming home as runner up and 998 Cotty recovering for third despite getting all hooked up with 617 Overy on the finishing line.

Result: 90 Mark Bartlett, 99 Richie Ahern, 998 Wayne Cottrill, 331 Jason Jackson

Allcomers - 19 cars returned for the Allcomers event which restored the action once again with 333 Cotton blasting the Mk2 of 169 Lenny Brinkley on the nose before Filo did the same to Toadie.  283 Webb then attacked 852 Jay before 4 Dave Wilde (Mk2) blasted the Volvo 240 Estate of 702 James Dodge with more Rover shenanigans then seeing Jay weigh into Toadie on the centre.  Bernie now attacked 22 Mr Tidmarsh although this allowed 481 Spiers to jack Bernie well giving Tidmarsh the opportunity to come round and seek revenge on the Southerner as well.  Webb was the winner of this one whilst action on the rundown lap saw 253 Bungee bury Spiers.

Result: 283 Bryan Webb, 264 Mark Welland, 253 Ben Hunt

Demolition Derby - A dozen cars made it back out for the destruction derby although 2 of them had already given their last before the event began.  The ten true participants nonetheless put on an excellent show which started with 787 Dee running in the Mk2 of 811 John Wheeler to finish him off on the spot with Bungee then piling into the back of them only to take a big shot from the Mk2 Estate of 264 Mark Welland.  In the event, this did more harm to Wellard who would go no further and whilst Webb fired into the wedge coffin carrier of 127 Bungle to finish the latter off, Bungee escaped from the heap to take a shot from Dee.  260 Keefy had also got caught up in the early pile but was also able to break free which went down well with the crowd who then saw Lane finish off Bungee before Webby arrived to bury the Camaro.  702 Jimbo fired into Dee whilst Keefy scored on Lane who also then took another package from Webby.  Jimbo then blasted Webby in turn with the latter going on to finish Dee with a shot up the back although this allowed Tidmarsh to get onto webby and put him in the wall.  Lane continued to work on Keefy but then fell prey to a superb jacking from Jimbo although the Camaro performed in perfect fashion with the back end going straight up in the air and over the axle to leave Lane perfectly mobile.  Webb now finished off Keefy’s Jensen with Lane then silencing Webb with a good shot to leave just three cars in the running.  Jimbo continued to blast the Camaro but it just wouldn’t give up until Lane turned it round to stop Jimbo with a meaty head-on.  This was enough for the Chevy but against all odds Jimbo managed to fire up again after suffering a big shot in the back wheel from Tidmarsh.  The two then moved around half a lap onto the back straight to share a few head-ons with what power they had left with Jimbo emerging as the winner after Tidmarsh had looked strong (if a bit roddy!) for most of the event.

Result: 702 Jimbo Dodge from 22 Andy Tidmarsh

This concluded a good day of action at Standlake with more big cars in attendance than at other recent HMCs and the day building nicely from some quiet early heats into better action after the rain (including the epic sixth heat).  The Final was Unlimited Banger racing at its best and the last two events once again turned up the action with great hits going in.  More of the same next year please.
