Standlake 13th June 2004 Under 1800cc Summer Open        Report by Bill

Another superb 81 car turnout & just like Labour at the recent elections, the unders category just about maintained power with a slender 45-36 majority over their unlimited counterparts. Plenty of promotions were represented thanks to visitors from Incarace, SAA, Mendips, Ringwood & Spedeworth. 817 Rich Hands sneaked a Mk3 Granny in whilst 106 Paul Gumm campaigned a Stellar, both of these being used. The Aylesbury boys supplied some fresh stuff, 417 Shelly having a rare & pretty Lancia Beta coupe & 102 Mr Fudge a Mk1 MGB GT & whilst the former had a torrid day he at least managed three more laps than the latter who didn’t do any. Sticking with the British beef, 415 Richard Berlin returned his Cambridge leaving star of the show fittingly on this occasion 313 Mayhem, whose 4/72 was his 250th A60 & special credit to Wilko who ensured a paint job worthy of the occasion!

Heat 1 (38 cars) - The lights turned green & 622 Ifor hadn’t even reached the start line before he’d used the Lancia as a ramp & invert his modern Proton. Respect to 152 Chris Sargent for using his Belmont to shield Ifor & just as well too as 728 Psycho Sam was unaware of what had happened & charged hard up Sargent, jacking the latter impressively. Ifor was ok & racing resumed with 198 Pete Boy showing well, tossing 248 Foxy Dave impressively aside though the latter was quick to recover. SAA’s 117 Chinny superbly wasted 385 James Taylor’s Sierra estate & made sure his man wouldn’t return by dishing out a head-on next time round. 76 Sean Enevoldsen (Sapphire) spun, taking 578 Bert with him though 148 Graham Kiddell (Stanza) clouted 76 whilst 2 Jonathon Bricknell (Pony) latched onto the Riley & bounced it round the Witney turn. Bricknell tried to repeat the dosage to 121 Pete Salter’s Mk5, eventually winding his man out into the path of the leading 606 Boomer who dished out an unavoidable head-on, 2nd placed 537 Mitch (Primera) also biffing 121, allowing 133 Karly (Sierra) to wind 537 out. Mayhem meanwhile continued only to collect a puncture, a marker tyre & (of course) roll! as a grateful 378 Gipsy Boy inherited the win ahead of Pete Boy & 410 Muppet for a Bluebird clean sweep, Boomer & Mitch recovering for the next two places.

Result: 378 Aidan Parker, 198 Pete Cullen, 410 Matthew Tyler, 606 Liam Weedon, 537 Mark Mitchell, 248 Dave Stopp

Heat 2 (34 cars) - The second saw 113 the Reading Bug (Sierra estate) spin with 75 Billy (Mk3 Fiesta) clipping him & Enevoldsen arriving to jack 113, Gipsy Boy clouting Billy. 815 Ian Castle’s Carlton removed Gumm with 573 Chris Brooks (Rover 213) meeting the Stellar on the nose before Psycho Sam arrived to trash Gumm & put pressure on 007 Matty Cox, causing the latter to spin out whilst 29 Nobby (Sunny) leaned out Boomer, the latter cleverly holding his man. 48 Adam Parker (Escort) was blitzed by persons unseen whilst 728 Smithy neatly leaned 807 Greeny’s Mk5 Escort van in. The latter held on before Foxy Dave latched on & launched the van head-on into an unfortunate 171 Mike Rowell, whose Cortina estate had last seen action at the 2003 opener! Salter jacked the Cambridge & then removed Castle whilst team mate 820 Martyn Perkins copied this second move on Brooks en route to 2nd behind Bert in his Kings Lynn motor with 316 Steven Sykes (Maestro) I’m pleased to announce 3rd.

Result: 578 Bryan Tritton, 820 Martyn Perkins, 316 Steven Sykes, 573 Chris Brooks, 727 Pat Smith, 133 Karl Day

Heat 3 (25 cars) - The last heat was quieter, 575 Tritt (Mazda 626) having a rare bad day at last having something to cheer about as he managed to spin 111 Steve Pritchett’s Cavalier. Chinny hooked Mayhem out but also went round, Mick quickly slapping it into reverse for a mild t-bone as Pete Boy swept 851 Bode’s Sapphire aside before latching onto Bert to give his man a ride around the wall. 578 survived but it was Boomer who left the rest for dead to claim the win, Pete Boy once again 2nd with Gipsy Boy 3rd.

Result: 606 Boomer, 198 Pete Boy, 378 Gipsy Boy, 2 Jon Bricknell, 820 Perkins, 578 Bert

Final (26 cars) - The grid draw for the final saw Gipsy Boy on pole but it was stable mate Boomer who got off to a blinder & lead the field into turn one. 275 Ozzie (Subaru) clearly wanted to get off early to see the football. Firstly he thundered up 252 Will Bignell’s Sierra estate, then he picked Mitch up & ran him in full chat, lifting the Primera off the ground before jacking Brooks at which point the Subaru cried enough. Sargent ploughed into Salter, the latter then being jacked down by Kiddell, though 121 clearly had a good memory & revenge jacked Sargent before being blitzed by persons unseen. Pete Boy removed the Granada, Hands copping a bone off the passing Nobby as Muppet ran 323 Andy Walker’s baby Volvo in, the keen Nobby aiming for Muppet only to see his man disappear, Nobby connecting with Sargent instead. 116 Coops took Mayhem out before the latter repeated his heat one antics by collecting a puncture & lose it only this time he managed to keep all four on the floor. Pete Boy clattered Foxy Dave aside as Boomer celebrated the win by removing Kiddell, Gipsy Boy riding shotgun in 2nd ahead of action man Bricknell and I can’t think of three more worthy young champions right now. They are Standlake dedicated & on top form.

Result: 606 Boomer, 378 Gipsy Boy, 2 Bricknell, 198 Pete Boy, 815 Ian Castle, 111 Steve Pritchett

Demolition Derby (8 cars) - The demo was brief, Enevoldsen meeting Bignell with Mayhem steaming the latter with 313 the only survivor of this trio & he went on to attack Pritchett & Kiddell after these latter two had connected. Kiddell was the only one to come out of this altercation & after a few laps of “chase me” Castle caught the Incarace man & quickly silenced his prey to net an easy win.

Result: 815 Ian Castle

Standlake 13th June 2004 Unlimitedcc Summer Open          Report by Bill

As mentioned there was a superb 36 for this class. Granadas top mounted with eight including a Mk1 for 8 Haydn Carter & Mk2 limo for 568 All Black, Jags also raising eight if you include the XJS for rookie 17 Robert Whiting whilst Volvos totalled seven including a 7 series estate for marque specialist 105 Slug & 273 Erny’s used 960. Running mate 274 Big Jon campaigned his 300C from the Mr Bean whilst Ringwood visitor 159 Rubble was also jap powered with a used Crown. There were three yanks, a used Buick Century station wagon for Mendips racer 900 Cheeser with 5 Mad Rath also choosing an estate, his being an Oldsmobile Delta whilst local man 177 Matt Whitehead impressed with a Thunderbird. Home grown British beef came in the guise of a used 6/110 for 199 Andy Dodge, fresh Humber Super Snipe for 702 GT & Rovers for 35 Bug (SD1) & 656 Fat Boy Fin (P5b coupe) leaving 541 Nick Cross’ gorgeous Oztin powered mk3 Zephyr hearse which stood head & shoulders above an already impressive line up.

Heat one (32 cars) -  was a blinder & began with 110 YoYo Man in only his third Granada, a Mk2 estate, spin rather than confront 984 Mark Byrne’s series 2 XJ but he paid the price as the Humber gave him one on the nose. Cross managed a couple of laps before Cheeser latched on & ran him in, exploding the rear of the hearse, Carter witnessing the move & arriving to jack the yank though he in turn felt the force of Slug’s Vole. Mad Rath embedded his yank firmly up Slug though he succumbed to a fine blast from All Black. Rubble walled Bug as Cross went on oppo to meet the advancing GT in a monster head-on which snapped & killed both motors stone dead. Meanwhile Dodge fired up All Black as Fat Boy Fin blew the SD1 up, a move which displeased Bug rather as he had vacated his steed & witnessed the incident from the other side of the Armco! Fat Boy Fin redeeming himself by dishing out a monster t-bone to 145 Dave Heather’s series 3 XJ to kill both motors as not surprisingly things then turned a tad quiet until Darren Goves (XJ) wrongly chose the narrow outside gap on turn three & hit the wall with the chasing Erny unavoidably locating his boot. 153 Willy Swerve (Mk2) however opted for the inside line & made it through though one of those in the chicane, 536 Kev Hardie (Bluebird estate) was not so lucky as Rubble charged in full chat with a t-bone. Whiting received the boot up treatment by persons unseen somewhere within this latest melee whilst 491 Neil Sparkes (Series 1 XJ) met 360 Shane Horwood’s Vole estate on the nose. 578 Bert drove a blinder, negotiating his diminutive (& ancient) Gallant through the carnage for a hard earned win ahead of the recovered Erny with 54 Winnie (XJ) completing the local clean sweep.

Result: 578 Bryan Tritton, 273 Stuart Emery, 54 Alan Cartwright, 364 Colin Carpenter, 153 Richard Martin, 491 Neil Sparks

Heat 2 (20 cars) - Anyone expecting a dull second race due to excessive damage in the opener was in for a pleasant surprise. Whiting gnawed on 732 Nort’s XJ bootlid before being swatted by 2 Jon Bricknell (Vole), Whiting then copping a packet from Slug. The latter in turn copped a length of the straight blitzing from Cheeser whilst Whiting was caught on the nose by All Black who in turn fell prey to a blast from 291 Darren Mabbitt’s estate. 283 Webby (Vole) lined Rubble in his sights, the latter making a beeline for Mabbitt, jacking the latter superbly before Slug, who still had Cheeser welded to his tailgate homed in on Mabbitt for a massive head-on. Rubble then came full bore, length of the straight to decimate Cheeser, not surprisingly snapping the Crown in the process whilst 364 Flumpy renewed acquaintances with old adversary 25 Tombo in a battle of the Mk2s, Nort coming to Tombo’s aide before All Black clipped 25, All Black ending the race on a high wasting Flumpy & blasting Webby. Big Jon almost undetected came through the littered debris for the win, the consistent Bert having to settle for 2nd ahead of Erny’s flying Volvo.

Result: 274 Jon Adams, 578 Bert, 273 Emery, 110 Derek Tyler, 732 Mark Bryant, 301 Darren Goves

Heat 3 (11 cars) - After all the damage the last heat was somewhat subdued by comparison though Rubble certainly played his part, nibbling at All Black’s boot & eventually putting his man in though Webby instantly zeroed in on the Ringwood man. Horwood blasted Webby only to be superbly jacked down by a recovered All Black as Bert showed a clean pair of heels for an easy win ahead of Spedeworth legend 7 Wally (Series 2 XJ) & Nort.

Result: 578 Bert, 7 Colin Farley, 732 Nort, 586 Karl Horwood

Final (14 cars) - Numbers were not surprisingly depleted for the final, 586 Karl Horwood (Volvo) hooking Byrne out with Bricknell queuing up for a t-bone, though he befell a crash from Webby. Big Jon was looking good for 3rd until shedding a wheel as Bert completed a fine hattrick, easily blowing the competition away, finishing well clear of Nort & Winnie, the latter still Jag powered but now in the 301 car.

Result: 578 Bert, 732 Nort, 301 Winnie, 110 Yo Yo, 491 Sparks, 283 Bryan Webb

Demolition Derby (7 cars) - The destruction derby saw Shane lead the charge to the Spedeworth boys, attacking both Nort & Wally, though the latter quickly got in a retaliatory blast before the reds came out to allow Mitch to enter the fray, he now the third pilot of the 301 machine. Having seen off the opposition in the unders DD, Castle had stayed out & now attacked Webby though he probably regretted his actions as Mitch arrived with one helluva package to blow up the Carlton. Wally cleverly stopped Mitch with a classic blast over the rear wheel as Byrne stopped Webby to leave just three Jags. Wally was impressing & met Byrne before using all his racing experience to see off Nort for a fine win & let’s hope it won’t be another six years before his next appearance!

Result: 7 Colin Farley
