Under 1800cc Bangers

30 cars greeted British summer time in this class, later in the day Cambridge were to win the boat race & there were also two representatives of their A60 variety too courtesy 415 Richard Berlin (the one that stayed on the wagon last time) & 313 Mayhem. 260 Mr Mag dipped into his collection & selected a tidy FB Victor whilst 622 Ifor Evans completed the beef with a smart Moggy Minor.

Heat 1 (21 cars) - 626 Fat By Fin (Lada Samara) was eager to impress in the opener, attacking 504 Vicram but Devil captain 575 Paul Tritton (mk3 Cav) came to his team mate’s rescue by removing Fin who also copped a shot off 111 Steve Pritchett’s Rover 213. Vicram recovered quickly & removed 110 Yo Yo Man’s mk3 Cavalier & Fat Boy Fin too was quickly back into the fray, attacking both 815 Ian Castle & Berlin, the latter having previously enjoyed a mild head-on with 573 Chris Brooks’ Rover 214. Berlin was then biffed by 113 the Reading Bug’s Maestro van before careering into Fat Boy Fin. Berlin continued until Mayhem flicked him aside though he in turn went round courtesy of 155 Mr Dem, the latter then going on to spin 606 Boom. 15 Simon Kerby (Sunny) fired 851 Bode in ripping a wheel off his Capri as 417 Shelly took the win in a very smart Donald, Devils Tritton & 576 Simon Hadland (Passatt) filling the places.

Result: 417 Sheldon Gardiner, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Simon Hadland, 19 Dave Spiers, 155 Craig Boyle, 504 Victor Baker

Heat 2 (26 cars) - 600 Jason Emery in a smart Capri introduced Pritchett to the wall early in the second with an assist from 151 Chris Baker’s smart baby Vole which kicked off a mini jacking train as Hadland blasted 97 Rabbit whilst Ifor in the flying Moggy bounced the 415 Cambridge (piloted on this occasion by Phil Cullen) round the wall. Boom stopped Yo Yo Man with a head-on before running Baker in whilst 505 Stuart Taylor (Pantry) trashed 754 Simon Colgan’s mk2 Fiesta. Ifor then repeated his wall of death experience on Cullen, whose dad 198 Pete was written off by a full bore follow-in from 261 Darren Mabbitt. Kerby won this one in his rapid Sunny, Dem & Vicram completing the Nissan clean sweep.

Result: 15 Simon Kerby, 155 Demolition, 504 Vicram, 575 Tritton, 417 Shelly, 573 Chris Brooks

Heat 3 (22 cars) - The last heat saw Tritton remove Mayhem at speed, the A60 nearly falling over but recovered quickly to steam 5 Ricky Pullen’s Astra before scattering some tyres & copping a blast from the other Cambridge. Mr Mag was soon on hand to remove 415 whilst Mayhem was soon shown the wall by 19 Dave Spiers (Golf). Mayhem bounced back but was spun by Baker whilst Mabbitt was gnawing on Mr Mag’s bootlid. Reynolds however flicked the wheel right & his assailant was stopped dead when he connected head-on at speed with Taylor. Mabbitt’s chum Rabbit fared little better, Vicram showing him the fence as Dem saw the race out with a stiff blast on Mr Mag, which saw the Victor start to jack. Shelly motored to another win, Hadland once again 3rd though this time Yo Yo Man came 2nd.

Result: 417 Shelly, 110 Derek Tyler, 576 Hadland, 97 Russell Lawton, 504 Vicram, 155 Demolition

Final (18 cars) - Mabbitt spun Emery in the final with the ensuing Vicram & Baker unable to avoid head-on contact with the 600 Capri. Shelly’s hattrick hopes were dashed when Tritton (in the 573 Rover) tossed him aside whilst 252 Will Bignell’s Mk3 Cav came to a rest whereupon it was gently biffed by the slowing Victor. Hadland motored to a rare win, Mr 2nd place & colleague Tritton of course was next with Yo Yo Man getting yet another trophy out of THAT Cavalier.

Result: 576 Hadland, 575 Tritton, 110 Yo Yo, 97 Lawton, 15 Kerby, 155 Demolition

Demolition Derby (8 cars) - Muppett took his dad’s Cav out in the demo & quickly attacked the veterans Mr Mag & Mayhem before neatly lining Bode up for a stiff head on from Castle, Rabbit arriving to jack & finish the Capri. Boom attacked Mr Mag & then dished out a t-bone to Muppet at which point the 110 Cav caught fire. Muppet exited quickly whilst Rabbit fortunately missed with DSU attempts on Castle & Dem before Castle blew Rabbit up. Mayhem steamed Castle at which point the 815 Bluey went bang leaving Rabbit to steam Mayhem, following this up with a stiff head-on. Mayhem was keen to dish out a couple of his own to leave Cambridge with their first win of the day!

Result: 313 Mick Cotton from 97 Lawton

Unlimited cc Bangers

There may only have been 17 in this class but as we often say it was a case of quality & not necessarily quantity. The Granada line up included a used coupe for 172 Bernie whilst 77 Bass produced a mk1 saloon. Jags were present thanks to 984 Mark Byrne (which sadly didn’t race) plus used ones for 2 Jon Bricknell & 145 Dave Heather whilst of the four Voles, 260 Mr Mag returned his 940 from Coventry. 702 GT returned his 4R to leave 719 Mickey Bates & 541 Nick Cross with top motors, a Thunderbird & huge Caddy Eldorado limo respectively.

Heat 1 (15 cars) - Bernie featured in the opener firing up 360 Shane Horwood’s Volvo before the latter was blown up by Bates. Cross latched onto Mr Mag whilst Bass followed Heather in, ending the latter’s day early though Bass paid for his actions when GT applied a portion of 4R. 54 Winnie arrived to t-bone GT as 110 Yo Yo Man in his customary Volvo got the better of 143 Chicken Man in a fascinating duel for the lead only to be leaned in by 852 Jamie Howell in a Vole estate. This allowed 578 Bert in his flying Gallant through for what was to be his first win of the day ahead of Chicken Man with Yo Yo Man recovering well for 3rd.

Result: 578 Bryan Tritton, 143 Martin Wilkes, 110 Derek Tyler, 54 Alan Cartwright, 541 Nick Cross, 77 Steve Beasley

Heat 2 (14 cars) - 26 Stuart Alderman tried to put the Westy in early in heat two but GT reversed his man in as Winnie narrowly escaped a 62 Liam Bunce (Estate) follow in. Howell neatly leaned Bates in, allowing Horwood a revenge blast on the yank with Alderman arriving with a shot over the Thunderbird’s front wheel. Howell then turned attentions to the other & somewhat larger American beast but got things wrong & allowed Cross to nail him. Alderman then tried nibbling on the Caddy boot but he was soon impressively blitzed by Cross. Winnie meanwhile ran GT in whilst Bernie flicked Bricknell aside before the reds came out to check on Alderman. Fortunately he was ok & a result was declared with Bert leading at the time & thus awarded his second win, Yo Yo Man improved a place whilst Bunce came home 3rd.

Result: 578 Bert, 110 Yo Yo, 62 Liam Bunce, 54 Winnie, 172 Simon Byrne, 77 Bass

Heat 3 (10 cars) - Bricknell made a bee-line for Cross in the last heat only to do the steering, leaving him prone to a reverse steam from the Caddy. Bunce was leading but lost valuable time when he elected to play with Cross, letting Bernie through. However he was taken out by Bass in an all mk1 encounter & Bert sneaked through for his hat trick, Bunce hanging on for 2nd with 54 Winnie 3rd.

Result: 578 Bert, 62 Bunce, 54 Winnie, 110 Yo Yo, 172 Bernie, 143 Chicken Man

Final (12 cars) - Bert’s hopes of a clean sweep ended after attacking GT, 578 forced to retire. Yo Yo Man clearly thought his chance had come, but the flying Cross caught & removed him, the snapping Caddy now bellying out on the corners. Bernie was next to attack Cross before Mr Mag arrived to heave the limo aside, 260 then getting GT round before latching onto Winnie. This was to prove Winnie’s saving grace as he had collected a flat, & whilst the local man went on to take the win, Mr Mag collected Alderman on the top bend, Cross arriving to blast him before GT finished the yank. Bernie completed the train by zeroing in on the 4R en route for 2nd, Yo Yo Man once again 3rd.

Result: 54 Winnie, 172 Bernie, 110 Yo Yo, 62 Bunce, 77 Bass

The demo was brief & only consisted of three entrants. GT made a bee-line for Alderman before Chicken Man arrived with a shot on the former. This lined GT up nicely for a wicked head-on from Alderman, before Chicken Man blew the latter up & take the win.

Result: 143 Chicken Man
