Report by Bill
The
sun was smiling & no doubt Mr Bean too if he knew that car numbers broke the
magical three figures as 103 bangers assembled to pay tribute. Visitors arrived
from Ringwood, Horndean, Smallfield & Incarace & there was plenty of
variety among the 63 unders with pick of the bunch being 155 Mr Demolition’s
tidy 120Y & 134 Toady’s Superminx whilst FBI racers 536 Mr Munch & 586
Karl Horwood campaigned matching A60s, an Oxford for the former & 16/60 for
the latter. I’ll stick in the FBI camp for my personal favourite if I may
& call me sentimental but I thought 535 Steve Cox’ Pujo 304 was the
coolest of the class.
Heat
1 (25cars) - Mr Munch commenced the day’s entertainment, running in 720
Kenny Blake’s Escort van (which was adorned with some superb artwork) before
hooking out 523 Malc Crocker whilst the other A60 came under fire from 727
Smithy. 91 Beech thumped 75 Lee Jenkins as Smithy again located Horwood, the
latter being on the wrong end once more when 728 buried his man before going on
to hammer 529 Daz Krauesslar’s Belmont, though he then came under fire from
Dem. 360 Shane (Corolla) arrived to remove the 120Y before Sam flipped Mr Munch
on his side & then made a bee-line yet again for the 16/60. Clearly enjoying
himself, Sam then heavily jacked Crocker only to cop a similar portion off Dem
to end a lively opener. 410 Muppet, showing regular consistency these days took
the win ahead of the ever constant 417 Shelly & 537 Mad Mitch both of whom
were Mk2 Cavalier powered for the day.
Result:
410 Matthew Tyler, 417 Sheldon Gardimer, 537 Mark Mitchell, 26 Stuart George,
538 Glen Lambourne, 007 Matty Cox
Heat
2 (33 cars) - 820 Martyn Perkins featured early in the second, heaving in
both 151 Chris Baker (who I must say was on the ball all day in his Accord)
& 374 Reece (Cav), a move which sidelined both 316 Big Ears (Mk3 Cavvy)
& 19 AJ Spiers (Golf) in the process. 851 Bode showed caution, slowed &
allowed 130 Jason Harrison a free shot in an all mk5 encounter whilst 815 Ian
Castle (Cav) parked 456 Grizzly (Capri) on the infield. As I mentioned, Baker
impressed & he quickly returned to the action, 716 Jamie Lyden (Sierra
estate) his victim whilst Perkins buried Spiers into the stricken Big Ears’
motor, the latter jacking nicely. 814 Groucho in a Primera was looking good
until collecting a flat & colliding with 920 Terry Church (Orion), cue
Perkins to blitz the latter impressively. Bode lost it & spun in front of
Reece who hit the brakes with birthday boy 114 Tony Hanblin (Colt) clattering
the pair of them before he received the bumps when Groucho ran him in, the
Superminx also copping a shot off the latter. Grizzly then trashed 911 Darren
Saveall’s Mk5 as Lyden buried Reece & Baker did likewise to 52 Potty’s
Capri to bring the curtain down on another breathtaking race, Castle performing
great guns to take victory from the back ahead of the quick Boom & 576 Simon
Hadland (Passatt).
Result:
815 Ian Castle, 606 Liam Weedon, 576 Simon Hadland, 575 Paul Tritton, 578 Bryan
Tritton, 537 Mitch
Heat
3 (29 cars) - No let up in the third with Krauesslar hooking Incarace’s
339 Ady Lightbown out & 007 Matty Cox copping a bone off Toady before 707
Mark Court (Mk5) arrived to fire up the FBI man. However he was superbly wasted
by 378 Gipsy Boy’s Capri, Harrison’s Mk5 receiving similar treatment at the
hands of a 656 Fat Boy Fin psycho blitz. Horwood powered his Farina up Fin
though he felt the force of 920 Chunky’s Cav as 69 Caney (in his ex prod rod
Jetta) homed in on 302 Billy Kerry’s Mk4, though he succumbed to an assault
from 275 Ozzie’s Subaru. 26 Stuart George clouted Toady though was then ran in
by 538 Glen Lambourne’s Monty estate as Dem superbly wasted Court. Chunky
caught Court (if you’ll pardon the play on words) before Gipsy Boy buried
Chunky, though Gipsy Boy didn’t escape either as Ozzie thundered Lightbown
into him, snapping the 378 Capri though his running mate Boom no doubt cheered
him up later when he briefly let him hold his winner’s trophy! 360 Shane
finished runner up ahead of Shelly.
Result:
606 Boom, 360 Shane Horwood, 417 Shelly, 538 Lambourne, 151 Chris Baker, 155
Craig Boyle
Heat
4 (18 cars) - Action in the fourth as Mitch dished out a t-bone to 602
Evvo’s Capri whilst Perkins fenced Bode ripping the bonnet off the 851 Cortina
in the process. Bode then befell a further hit from Smithy before the reds came
out to extract the shaken 851 pilot. Smithy was on the case on the re-start
burying Jenkins but later took a shot from Lyden though he recovered to blast
202 Westy’s Golf on the run down. Hadland cruised to the win, ahead of Castle
& 578 Bert (Montego).
Result:
576 Hadland, 815 Castle, 578 Bert, 575 Paul Tritton, 537 Mitch, 202 Matthew West
Heat
5 (30 cars) - The earlier damage was now starting to take it’s toll on car
numbers & this showed in the last heat. Ozzie tried to reduce car numbers
further when he thundered both Spiers & Jenkins in together whilst Baker
blasted Chunky though Court was to run him in later. Sadly Ozzie was to retire
soon after when a hose blew & he was scalded & I trust you’re feeling
better & smiling again by the time you read this. 575 Paul Tritton (Reggie
21 estate) heaved Shane aside as Lambourne embedded himself in 111 Steve
Pritchett’s Cavalier. Boom then arrived to blast Lambourne as Baker saw the
race out by superbly jacking Caney. Boom was having a cracking day & took
his second win of the day ahead of Tritton & Shelly (he too featuring again
in the places).
Result:
606 Boom, 575 Paul Tritton, 417 Shelly, 578 Bert, 815 Castle, 316 Steven Sykes
Final
(23 cars) - Jay was now in his brother’s car for the final & put
himself away when he missed his intended Mr Munch whilst Shane steamed Reece.
207 Mike Woodward (Nissan Sunny ZX) & Castle then careered into the latter
& the collision saw the back of Reece’s Cav leap into the air. Fancied
runner Shelly was an early retiree whilst Tritton heaved 252 Will Bignell (Cavvy)
aside & Beech crashed into Lyden. Mr Munch now turned his Farina round to
meet Bert on the nose though he copped a shot off Beech who in turn took one
from a revenge seeking Lyden. To rub salt into his wounds, Bert then backed the
Monty off as Mr Munch climbed from his dead steed. Mitch was impressive all race
as Westy to name just one will vouch whilst Hadland spun Caney, the latter
recovering quickly but lining himself up for a steam from Lyden. Beech arrived
to blast the pair of them before Westy was the next to wear the front end of the
91 bumper. Indeed Beech almost rewrote the story line when he nearly succeeded
in removing the leading Boom, though the latter managed to hang on to round off
a fine hattrick, Muppet coming next with Mitch a very forceful 3rd.
Perkins rounded the race off by removing Westy.
Result:
606 Boom, 410 Muppet, 537 Mitch, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Hadland, 815 Castle
Demolition
Derby (12 cars) - The DD began with 105 Slug slinging his Pantry in reverse
where the advancing Caney obliged by jacking him. Jay in turn embedded himself
in Caney before Slug nailed the latter with Horwood arriving with a shot over
Caney’s wheel. Slug then blasted Evvo but fell victim to a steam from Boom
before Mitch arrived to meet the latter on the nose. Horwood also gave Boom a
head-on before Perkins met the A60 similarly which caused 586 to spark up.
However Boom was unaware of this & steamed the already dead Horwood before
the reds came out to allow marshals to put the fire out. Just three made the
restart with Boom braking, inviting Perkins a free blast. The latter accepted
the challenge & then became the filling in the sandwich when Mitch arrived,
820 now starting to snap & indeed Perkins was soon to retire. Mitch &
Boom didn’t have much more to give & it was Boom’s day alright as his
motor outlasted his adversary’s to take yet another win.
Result: 606 Boom
Standlake
16th May 2004 Dave Godfrey Memorial, over 1800cc.
A
superb 40-car turnout in this class & a top quality line up it was too. The
locals really had put the effort in on the paint front & it’s tough to
know where to begin the car list. I’ll start with the 13 strong Granada entry
which included a mk2 hearse for 291 Darren Mabbitt, Jags were next popular with
no less than nine examples, whilst 273 Erny’s 960 was among the six Volvos
present. 274 Big Jon had a 300C & 600 Jason Emery turned out a smart
Vauxhall Royale while 5 Mad Rath had one of three Yanks on show, a used Chevvy
Caprice Classic estate. The other two were both fresh, Winnie with another
estate, a Ford Fairmont & both of these dwarfed 104 Lee Gumm’s Mustang,
whilst 622 Ifor had the lone Rover as he returned his P4. 272 Gazza was 6/110
mounted (used), leaving 568 All Black with top tin, an absolutely stunning fresh
example of the marque still on it’s original lump & sounding & running
every bit as good as it looked too!
Heat
1 (20 cars) - 559 Ug got the action underway, attempting to run the Royale
in though his chum 98 Wizard showed him how it should be done as he latched onto
both 328 Stuart Morse & 97 Rabbit (both XJ3s) & buried the pair of them,
a proud achievement for a Mk5 Cortina! 93 Mr Gobby (Mazda 626 estate) arrived
far too late to avenge & put himself in as 665 Roy Grant (estate) spun Emery
who was totalled moments later when Ug steamed him over the front wheel though
sadly this action occurred on the centre. 6 Mark Holdswoth (Vole 740 estate)
spun Wizard as Grant for some reason chose to give Rabbit a head-on as 301
Govesy & 244 Bunny brought their stunning XJs home 1st & 2nd
respectively, 2 Jon Bricknell (estate) completing the local clean sweep in 3rd.
Result:
301 Darren Goves, 244 Michael Bunyan, 2 Jon Bricknell, 764 Peter Morgan, 138
Kevin Goldup, 6 Mark Holdsworth
Heat
2 (14 cars) - Bricknell appeared in the second & hooked 266 Devil out
though the latter recovered to spin 415 Richard Berlin’s series 2 XJ. Good to
see 702 GT back out so soon after damaging a couple of toes at the team meeting
& he blasted 269 Rob the Roof as Erny in the indecently quick Vole took the
win ahead of 600 Nasher & 143 Chicken Man.
Result:
273 Stuart Emery, 600 Brian Nash, 143 Martin Wilkes, 707 Mark Court, 568 Joe
Maslen, 145 David Heather
Heat
3 (35 cars) - The third proved to be a heavy affair with All Black t-boning
764 Peter Morgan & 707 Mark Court (XJ) executing a fine steam to Mad Rath.
Ifor ploughed through the hearse as Gazza used the Westy to blow up Rob the
Roof. Winnie attacked 297 Womble with the momentum careering the yank into
Morgan, the latter then getting a close inspection of a Volvo estate when
Bricknell buried 00 Davey Gibbard’s example into him. Ifor then met Bricknell
on the nose only to cop a blast off 133 Karly’s XJ, ripping a wheel off the
Aunty. Mad Rath then powered his station wagon up Karly as GT followed Gazza in
before falling a victim himself at the hands of 138 Goldy (Vole estate). Winnie
annihilated Devil, the latter then receiving a large portion from 112 Rusty (XJ)
whilst Mad Rath engaged Gibbard in a solid head-on though he received a similar
dosage from 210 Kosski’s Volvo estate. Winnie then arrived to jack Mad Rath,
the yank doing a fine Cortina estate impression but he was superbly jacked in
turn by Gazza. Gumm met Berlin before the latter was spun by 110 YoYo Man’s XJ
& then Rusty reversed into Berlin though he was nailed by All Black. Grant
then finished Berlin off with a t-bone as Erny completed back-to-back wins ahead
of Holdsworth & 481 Bernie Spiers.
Result:
273 Erny, 6 Holdsworth, 481 Bernie Spiers, 97 Russell Lawton, 143 Wilkes, 568
Maslen
Heat
4 (13 cars) - Gibbard attacked Court in the last heat though the latter
quickly replied but put a wheel back in the process. All Black gnawed on 491
Neil Sparkes’ (XJ) bootlid but Rusty soon came to the rescue though he
succumbed to a shot from Kosski. Rusty then cleverly held his man up but the
Incarace man wriggled free just in time as Big Jon loomed large in his mirror.
All Black trashed YoYo Man though Winnie arrived to steam the Westy though All
Black powered out of serious danger & went on to spin Kosski before Winnie
once more closed in on 568. Big Jon danced the quick Cedric home for victory
ahead of stable-mate Erny with Sparkes in 3rd.
Result:
274 Jon Adams, 273 Erny, 491 Neil Sparkes, 481 Spiers, 143 Wilkes, 568 Maslen
Final
(19 cars) - The final will be remembered for a long time to come because of
the big crash on Wizard (who was out in Mr Gobby’s Mazda). It happened that
fast that the Madza past by in a flash of purple with Kosski & Rusty firmly
attached, the 93 bonnet ripping clean off & perching on top of the Armco
whilst the car snapped impressively, all the passenger footwell meeting the
tunnel & the steering wheel disappearing through the driver’s window!
Fortunately Wizard was skinny & emerged stiff & no doubt shaken but
otherwise perfectly ok. Any action after this was obviously tame by comparison,
Winnie clashing with Grant & Erny steaming Nasher the noteworthy high spots
as Govesy tip-toed his way to victory, Bunny riding shotgun with Big Jon
completing the local clean sweep.
Result:
301 Goves, 244 Baby Bunny, 274 Adams, 6 Holdsworth, 481 Spiers, 54 Winnie
Demolition
Derby (10 cars) - The DD began with Gazza blasting 76 Sean Enevoldsen (Mk3)
with Devil arriving to t-bone the latter before Womble jacked 76. Enevoldsen
then came under fire from Winnie & Kosski & he must have felt giddy when
Holdsworth & then Winnie again attacked. Gazza meanwhile steamed Gumm before
superbly jacking Winnie as Kosski held him before Grant came off the centre at
the Westy. Enevoldsen disappeared in a cloud of steam but managed to restart
& meet Holdsworth in a storming head-on before Gazza fired up the Mk3. This
then left just Gazza & Kosski & after much cat & mouse they died
together for a joint decision.
Result:
210 Paul Latkowski = 272 Gary Murrell
