Standlake 9th October 2005 under 2litre           Report By Bill

Exactly how many drivers intended racing will never be known as the ministry chose this day to hold random checks on the Abingdon weighbridge. Mobiles spread the news and numerous racecars were seen turning back. 25 drivers did make it 110 Yo-Yo man and 815 Ian Castle both bringing a second motor hoping to cash in on valuable points, this being the penultimate scoring round. Car wise, Volvos totalled five which was one more than the Granada count, 106 Junior campaigning a fresh mk2 whilst 362 Martin Faherty returned his mk1 from the caravan DD. The other two motors of note were also used, 787 Ratman was out in Mayhem’s Hendo pre’68 Cambridge and 177 Matt Whitehead raced his Sceptre from the same meeting. Neither 362 nor 787 made it past heat one; the hanging mk1 starting to snap and Ratman injured his back.

Heat 1 (23 cars) - Proceedings got off to an explosive start just two shy of a full grid, 167 Westy’s Cav being turned round and jacked by 85 Tricky’s Vole estate and then run into 400 Trigger’s Acclaim, the latter having 2 Jon Bricknell’s Volvo estate attached to his boot lid at the time. 998 David James (Audi 80) then collided with Westy as 253 Bungee parked his Volvo atop two tyres. Tricky went on to heave 54 Winnie’s Vole aside, Trigger doing likewise to Castle which was sufficient to stop the Jackpot. Trigger followed this up by removing Winnie though ran head-on into Bricknell, Winnie keeping it in reverse and panicking the Mendips man onto the infield. 252 Wild Willy took the win, his first ever and was chased home by Devils 575 Tritt and 576 Simon Hadland for a Bluebird clean sweep.

Result: 252 Will Bignell, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Simon Hadland, 606 Liam Weedon, 106 Paul Gumm, 77 Steve Beasley

Heat 2 (22 cars) - One less for the second, 606 Boomer quickly firing 70 Steven Hart’s Bovingdon mk2 in but came a cropper allowing his victim a revenge shot. However Boomer escaped in the nick of time and Hart caught 248 Dave Stopps instead. Junior picked up and clattered Tricky round the Witney turn before 77 Bass (mk2) homed in and buried his man on the opposite bend ending 106’s day. Castle hooked Bungee out but was run into James by 104 Scrapper’s Primera as the results repeated themselves.

Result: 252 Will Bignell, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Simon Hadland, 573 Chris Brooks, 815 Ian Castle, 110 Derek Tyler

Heat 3 (14 cars) - Numbers dropped to 14 for the last heat, Westy’s suicide lunge at Scrapper only succeeded in putting himself away as Tricky tried removing Winnie only for the latter to reverse roles though uncharacteristically the Standlake top dog then gave the fence a head-on, Tricky delivering a hard t-bone next time around. Wild Willy became “Mild Willy” as he completed his hat trick, though this time Scrapper finished runner up, Tritt and Hadland as before filling the next two places.

Result: 252 Will Bignell, 104 Lee Gumm, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Simon Hadland, 573 Chris Brooks, 77 Steve Beasley

Final (14 cars) - 14 again for the final, Yo-Yo Man (Mazda 626) with much to do impressed with the bumper, removing 2nd placed Scrapper but was finally silenced when Bungee blew him up as the Devils waved Tritt through before closing ranks behind him. 580 Dippy Dave (Mondeo) leaned Hadland briefly on the infield but promptly put himself away and came under fire from Boomer as Whitehead exchanged head-ons with Trigger. Willy was having to work hard for his fourth win and indeed was spun and leaned head-on into Scrapper but recovered before Bricknell could land a killer blow but it meant a Devil clean-up with Tritt winning from 573 Beanie’s Mondeo, Boomer and Hadland. Castle was next over the line and his two points could prove vital in the championship race.

Result: 575 Paul Tritton, 573 Chris Brooks, 606 Liam Weedon, 576 Simon Hadland, 815 Ian Castle, 252 Will Bignell

Demolition Derby (8 cars) - Castle was one of just eight takers for the death and after a slow start it was he that delivered a blow to Bungee’s rear-wheel before Trigger landed one over the latter’s front wheel to leave the 253 mobile but crabbing badly. Castle remained on the offensive, jacking the Acclaim down and running it in allowing Dippy Dave to home in on the Mendips racer. Boomer finished Bungee off, planting him into the vacant 998 Tracey Cotton rookie Mondeo before Dippy Dave caught Bungee DSU. Bricknell arrived to blast Dippy Dave though had his tailgate jacked down by Boomer. Things then turned quiet and it seemed a case of who had the most petrol or biggest steam tank would win. Eventually Dippy Dave bailed out and Boomer put Bricknell’s tailgate right down making it a Bluebird fight to the death, Boomer seeing Castle off with a head-on and denying his foe of the six points.

Result: 606 Liam (Boomer) Weedon
