Sixty cars exactly for this annual fixture & comprised a mixed bag of motors. 417 “Gammon” Shelly making a rare banger outing plumped for an Ital, 888 Donny Lane campaigning it’s predecessor a Marina while 121 Pete Salter marked his return to the sport with a mk2 Escort. Further ‘70s interest featured 14 Baby Face’s Cortina, a pretty mk4, material man 313 Mayhem a Dolomite with the top two motors coming from the land of the rising sun, 151 Chris Baker’s Datsun Sunny while 791 Mickey Rowlands came out of retirement with a RWD Corolla.

Heat 1 (29 cars) - Mickey’s brother 890 Doris (Volvo 340) was also making a return & got off to a flyer in the opener leaving the other 28 racers chasing his wake while 167 Westy (Astramax van), 413 Sam Nichols (Reno 5), 32 Steven Walker (Corolla) & 312 Roger Taylor (Escort) all got in a tangle as early as turn one. 252 Wild Willy Bignell (Sunny) worked his way up to 3rd heaving 84 Greeno’s Cavalier aside along the way as Doris survived a 79 Pete Addis (Escort) follow in though at the expense of a puncture & a detached seat! 104 Lee Gumm (Reno 19) was to capitalise on this & overhauled Doris to take up a lead he was never to lose, Doris succumbing to a Bignell jacking. 111 Paul Pritchett buried 101 Martin Penny in a battle of the Sunnys though Pritchett became a casualty himself when Greeno with Walker in tow ran him in. Vermin 52 Nick Potts fenced 133 Karly in a battle of the Cherries before Pritchett steamed Potts with 132 Alfie (Colt) in turn blasting Pritchett. As mentioned Gumm drove to his first win of the day ahead of 225 Charlie Barrett (Sunny) with 78 Jamie Stepp (Metro) 3rd.

Result: 104 Lee Gumm, 225 Charlie Barrett, 78 Jamie Stepp, 110 Derek Tyler, 600 Jason Emery, 890 Gary Rowland

Heat 2 (28 cars) - One less for the second, regular Autospeed visitor 83 Andy Beavan (Cavalier) picking Baby Face up, the latter hitting the brakes but unable to avoid the follow in while Baker buried Lane. Barrett spun Mayhem though the latter blocked the formers progress, Little Bear retaliating by hitting the Dolly on the nose. Pond life Pete spun 302 Billy Kerry’s Metro before 606 Boomer rolled his Sunny spectacularly, corkscrewing in the air before flopping onto his roof necessitating a race stoppage to check all was ok. 600 Jase who’d really gone to town on the artwork on his very smart Sunny led them away on the restart as Mayhem came under fire from 93 Dan Smith’s Metro though 313 recovered quickly & spun Kerry, the latter bouncing back only to be wound out by 575 Tritt’s Reno 19. Not a good race for the Rooster camp as 152 Chris Sargent (Orion) flattened 97 Niki Brydon’s Metro killing both motors while 77 Bass (Sunny) flicked 248 Dave Stopp’s Reno 19 aside. Kerry flattened Baby Face’s mk4 after the reds as Jase in his rapid mount chalked up a rare win from Tritt & 815 Ian Castle (Belmont).

Result: 600 Jason Emery, 575 Paul Tritton, 815 Ian Castle, 691 Brian Lane, 527 Stuart Wise, 43 Dan Ross

Heat 3 (27 cars) - Doris picking 106 Paul Gumm’s auto Civic up, the latter leaning on 85 Little Tricky’s Mazda & somehow all three found grip & avoided what seemed an inevitable collision with the wall & whilst Lee G spun 43 Dan Ross’ Cavvy Jase nipped inside to take up the running. Doris steamed 74 Steve Ledbury’s Astra, Tricky doing likewise to another Bedrock racer 76 Sean Enevoldsen (Metro), Barrett flicking Lane into 412 Stuart Young’s (Pujo 205) path. Taylor unavoidably caught Lane DSU before Baby Face came against the flow at the unlucky Marina pilot. Greeno removed Paul G, 41 Danny Pullen (Escort) biffed Baby Face while Doris tossed the Dolly aside. Paul G was soon back in action & pulverised Addis before Bass leaned him head-on into Young. 43 Dan Ross (Cavvy) then delivered a solid bone to 106 while Doris launched Taylor into Mayhem before thundering leader Jase in on the penultimate lap meaning Lee G made it two out of two ahead of Bignell & Barrett, Doris worth a mention in 4th.

Result: 104 Lee Gumm, 252 Will Bignell, 225 Charlie Barrett, 890 Gary Rowland, 85 Aaron Rowland, 411 Padraig Fitzgerald

Heat 4 (28 cars) - One more for the penultimate heat, Walker burying 187 John Gander’s Fiesta & then winding Pritchett out as Bignell attacked Beavan, shedding his fin plate in the move. Doris buried 829 Daz Krauesslar’s Corolla causing Smith & Karly to take evasive action allowing Shelly a free shot on Karly. Pritchett came close to rolling Doris, Baker scored on Young as 576 Simon Hadland (Rover 214) removed Shelly. Little Tricky then pulverised Shelly with Walker jacking the Ital some more while Boomer all but removed 110 YoYo Man’s Metro back sub frame. Doris ran the 527 Stu Wise’ Nova in & then eased up on a Bignell follow in, the latter opting for a spin though Doris lost it & copped a large one on the nose from the lively Walker. Amazingly the Volvo backed off but Bignell followed it in, breaking the gearbox ending Doris’ day. 207 Compo (Maestro) thundered Pritchett in as Castle took the win from Devils Tritt & Hadland to end a blinder.

Result: 815 Ian Castle, 575 Paul Tritton, 576 Simon Hadland, 83 Andy Beavan, 32 Steven Walker, 70 Steven Hart

Heat 5 (41 cars) - A whopping 41 for the last heat, Alfie running Smith in, Walker doing likewise to 691 Shifter’s smart Astra estate. 482 Dave Spiers (Mazda) blasted Salter, Little Tricky jacked Westy’s van down whilst Bignell buried Boomer big time. 272 Steven Woodward (Astra) was in his first race & came under siege from Salter & Barrett while 150 Craig Preston (Reno 5) copped a big one on the nose from Spiers necessitating a stoppage to check on Preston. On the résumé Beavan blasted Baby Face for the second time of the day, Salter attacked Pritchett & then Gander but Pritchett landed a revenge steam as Barrett set the pace with Lee G snapping at his heels. Walker removed Big Tricky at the second attempt, Compo tossed Lane aside who then survived a Bass attack while Baby Face lined Beavan up for a revenge follow in only to come under attack from 282 Martin Monger’s tender Maestro. Barrett instantly swept Monger aside, Beavan removed Baby Face’s rear shaft before Pritchett gave the former a lift as he got a bonnet bolt stuck under the Autospeed racer’s motor. 411 Paudi’s Metro was wasted unseen as Lee G removed Barrett on the penultimate lap to secure his hat trick, Tritt completing a hat trick of 2nds ahead of Compo with Barrett recovering for 4th ending another cracking race.

Result: 104 Lee Gumm, 575 Paul Tritton, 207 Michael Woodward, 225 Charlie Barrett, 106 Paul Gumm, 573 Chris Brooks

Final (28cars) - Barrett & Lee G once again duelled for the lead. Adam Simpson now piloting the Ital blasted 272 Woodward with Krauesslar landing a bone as Bignell heaved Lane aside. Pullen jacked Westy down superbly before the reds came out to extinguish the flames in the Krauesslar & Monger motors. Karly tossed Simpson aside on the restart, Lane spun whereupon he was collected by Walker & Bignell while Bass spun Pullen. Lane then removed Bass causing Gumm & Barrett to take evasive action allowing 3rd placed Tritt to close in. Walker hooked Stepp out, Bignell tried fencing Walker who held it well & indeed removed Bignell moments later. An oil spillage on turn three then claimed more casualties than a virus including Tritt & Barrett who went out together leaving Lee Gumm a long way clear of Castle. Lane found the wall after steaming Pullen with Big Tricky & Walker both blasting the Marina while 207 Compo (Maestro) ended Tritt’s race with a solid t-bone. Just three went the distance, Lee notching up his fourth win & emulated his brother’s success twelve months earlier winning the coveted Havoc final, from Castle who nearly came a cropper when he collected the empty Pullen motor with Spiers keeping it going but a long way behind in 3rd.

Result: 104 Lee Gumm, 815 Ian Castle, 482 Dave Spiers, no other finishers

Special awards were handed out at this stage, Jase getting smartest car, Baker rarest car, Bignell best tryer & Doris top entertainer.

Demolition Derby - An impressive 22 for the DD though neither Woodward nor Stepp made the start as action kicked off for some reason before the lights turned green! Once order was restored Lee G thundered up Preston, Westy narrowly missed nailing Kerry on the nose & instead copped one from Monger. Addis met Enevoldsen in a solid head-on, Ledbury flattened Westy’s van only to come under siege from Paul G. Tritt blasted 611 Gavin Harris (Escort) as Preston rolled bringing about a premature halt though somehow Monger connected with the upturned Reggie before steaming 791 now being driven by Doris, Monger being sent off for his actions. On the résumé Smith met Kerry in a solid all Metro head-on, Doris went on oppo looking for action though he found it in the guise of Paul G who gave him one up the rear. Brother Lee dished a biggie to Potts; Simpson blasted Paul G before Doris met the latter on the nose, the 106 Civic now starting to snap. Tritt caught Simpson over the rear wheel before running him in though the Ital was still mobile. Doris steamed Harris only to get stuck on the infield, Tritt finally saw Simpson off while Paul G’s twisted, crabbing wreck found Harris for a gentle head-on. Lee G nailed Tritt with a monster head-on though the Devil was still running & delivered an awesome blow to silence Paul G before blasting Harris. Lee G then fired into life & the two Renaults settled the issue with one final heavy head-on encounter, neither of which backed away from. Though the cash was shared, Lee Gumm was quite happy for Tritt to take the trophy & so ended an impressive day’s entertainment.

Result: 104 Lee Gumm = 575 Paul Tritton
