Standlake 15th May 2005 David Godfrey Memorial.            Report by Mike (Maggot) Ridgway

An excellent entry of 88 cars gathered in the sunny Oxfordshire countryside for the annual running of the Mr Bean memorial in honour of the late Dave Godfrey.

1st the Unders which attracted the largest entry with 55 cars, cars worth a mention being 91 Beech’s Avenger and 313 Mayhems Riley 4/72 being the best of the bunch.

Heat 1 (25 cars) - 85 Little Tricky (bluebird) put 574 in backwards at the start of the heat, 20 Kenny Blake (Nova) took an accidental T bone before 820 Maggot followed 313 Mayhem into the stationary Blake. Mayhem was then jacked by 132 Alfie (Sunny), as Alfie drove away 225 Charlie Barrett took a suicidal shot on Mayhem killing his mk3 escort for the day. Westy (Sapphire) spun into the tyres by 411 Paudi, before Paudi could recover he took a shot over the back wheels from 101 Penny’s Bluey while 69 Head Case (Spacewagon) pushed 600 Jason Emery into the fence. 126 Casey the winner from 104 Lee Gumm (Corola) and Little Tricky who spun 104 on the run down lap.

Result: 126 Dave Case, 104 Lee Gumm, 85 Aaron Rowland, 69 Martyn Cane, 507 Paul Ashby, 852 Jamie Howell

Heat 2 (20 cars) - was a quiet heat, 378 Gypsy Boy (Bluebird estate) picked up 834 Toady but couldn’t put him away. 373 Wilko (Bluebird) lost a back wheel, 44 Cooperman followed in 91 Beech snapping the Avenger. 2 Jon Bricknell (Sunny) won from the front followed by 576 Hadland (Accord) with 573 Brooks (Audi) third.

Result: 2 Jon Bricknell, 576 Simon Hadland, 573 Chris Brooks, 606 Liam Weedon, 815 Ian Castle, 44 Andy Cooper

Heat 3 (43 cars) – all in now so a very full track saw lots of action.  Mayhem took a huge jacking from 834 Toady’s Tina while 378 Gypsy Boy put 40 Squeeky (Sierra estate) in hard on the pit straight. The reds came out for some unknown reason. On the restart 575 Tritt (Suburu) spun 101 Gumm into the fence and was in turn spun by 133 Karly Day (Carina). Gypsy Boy steamed Toady while 85 Tricky followed in 104 Lee Gumm on the run down lap. 126 Casey the winner.

Heat 4 (33 cars) - A big first bend pile up involving 138 Goldup, 600 Emery, 507Ashby and 185 Yaxley. 529 Daz gently jacked a recovering Ashby while Bricknell spun 167 Westy into the fence. 77 Bass (Prairie) took Lee Gumm into the fence. Bricknell again took the win from 85 Tricky (Bluebird) with 378 Aiden Parker third.

Result: 2 Jon Bricknell, 85 Aaron Rowland, 378 Aidan Parker, 104 Lee Gumm, 248 Dave Stopp, 101 Martin Penny

Final (32 cars) - 852 Jay took Emery for a push round the Armco while Casey spun Little Tricky into the fence. Ashby tried to put Casey in but couldn’t. 104 jacked 290 while 2 Bricknell took 167 for a trip round the Armco. Bricknell though was the star of the show with his 1300cc Sunny spinning all before him including the rapid Casey, he took the chequered flag from 606 Boomer (mk Cav) with 104 Lee Gumm third.

Demolition Derby - an excellent entry of 14 cars, Gypsy Boy took 341 Dan Wilder all the way in. Ashby jacked Mayhems Farina sky high while Bricknell planted 373 Wilko’s Bluey into the stationary Wilder. Bricknell jacked Lee Gumm. Mayhem was then pushing 104 Gumm round and then was jacked by the impressive Bricknell. 6 Mark Holdsworth went for Bricknell, completely missed him and embarrassingly hit the fence. A recovered Holdswoth was then jacked by Gypsy Boy. Bricknell meanwhile was showing Mayhem some attention and took a steam from Gypsy Boy. As Bricknell got free he took a blast from Holdsworth who in turn was jacked by 716 Jamie Lyden’s Bluey. After a bit of chasing round Mayhem was finally finished off by Wilko who also expired leaving Gypsy Boy as the winner.

A very good entry of 34 cars for the overs with a dozen Jags amongst the runners. Several cars worth a mention were Erny HMC P5 Rover and a fresh one for All Black 568 Joe Maslem. Jon Bricknell had a stretch Mk 2 Granada Limo but car of the meeting was 900 Cheeser’s Bentley T2 complete with original lump. 301 Darren Goves picked up the smart car award.

Heat 1 (20 cars) - 4 Charlie (Jag) spun 568 Maslen who took a gentle head on from 2 Bricknell. 79 Pete Addis followed in 537 Mad Mitch (Volvo 240), despite severe damage to Mitch’s Volvo it still carried on it’s way. A spinning 281 Roy Thompson (Vole) took a T-Bone from 4 Charlie. 301 Darren Goves (Jag) was having a nibble at Maslem who jacked a stationary 143 Chicken man big time leaving his Granada Estate a right state. 273 the winner from 301.

Result: 273 Stuart Emery, 301 Darren Goves, 112 Shaun Russell, 54 Alan Cartwright, 244 Michael Bunyan, 600 Brian Nash

Heat 2 (17 cars) - Mad Rath (Jag) was spun by 785 James Taylor and was then given a gentle head on by the Volvo of 213 Lee Fletcher. 37 Spanner (Jag) picked up 219 Mark Fletcher’s Volvo taking him flat out in leaving his bonnet and half his front end on the fence. 281 Thompson was put in the fence by 455 Nick Marlow (Mk2). 383 Bully took the win, on the run down lap 564 Mr Splat (Volvo estate) jacked up 869 Peskitt’s Crown who in turn was taken in by 785 Jambo (Mk2 Est). 37 Spanner was 2nd and 42 Messer was 3rd.

Heat 3 (22 cars) - 5 Mad Rath ran in 70 Steven Hart (Jag) but went in himself which left him ripe for a steam by 485 Marlow. 281 Thompson went in unaided but as he was exiting his 740 volvo was struck by 213 sending him flying over the fence but was luckily unscathed. 2 Bricknell’s limo was spun by 33 Matthew Walker. 244 Baby Bunny (Mk2 Est) the winner from 42 Messer (Mk2) and 54 Winnie(Jag) third.

Heat 4 (18 cars) - 37 Spanner put the 213 Lee’s Volvo in hard. Erny planted 415 Richard Berlin’s XJ6 in the fence as 564 Splat spun 281 this time being driven by Will Bignel. Bignel recovered to put Bricknell in though he also went in himself. Winnie took time out to send Cheeser’s Bentley on a spin. 33 Matthew took his Jag to victory from 4 Pullen & 70 Hart.

Final (18 cars) – Baby Bunny lined up on pole for the Incarace style draw and promptly drew out 0 so the grid remained as it was. A bit of an rod fest developed but it was still a good race none the less. Will Bignell and 900 Cheeser went in together early in the race. Baby Bunny was an early leader from the front but was soon overtaken by 600 Nash (Mk2), but Bunny wasn’t far behind and managed to squeeze past to take the prestigious win from an unlucky 600, third was 301 Darren Groves who had gone home to bring a Bluebird as his Jag had packed up earlier in the day.

Demolition Derby - Only 6 for the DD, from the off 177 Matt Whitehead Steamed the 900 Cheeser Bentley, Cheeser turned the Bentley round and with a bit of a run up gave Whitehead a stonker of a head on finishing both cars. 707Mark Court (Jag) and 37 Spanner collided head on with 37 backing off to take the win.
