Beech Memorial 24th September 2006 - Under 1800cc Bangers Report by Ed Anderson
The
much anticipated Dave
"Beech" Memorial
at Standlake
raised a whopping field of nearly 180 cars on September
24 although this
was some way short of the booked in entry of over 240. The 1800cc
class was the more popular with around 115 cars in total with the Bluebird as
ever the favoured tool including a rare RWD version for 482 Owen Spiers while
the remaining FWD entry included a Mk1 Cavalier for 109 Heidi Radburn and the
used Montego limo of 611 Gavin Harris. Onto the RWD selection with five Capris
including a Mk1 for 275 Ozzie Summerhil and Mk5 Cortinas for 121 Pete Salter,
172 Ben Forbes and 691 Brian Lane, the formers a used estate. Other interest
included a Stellar for 439 Danny Sutton, Riva estate for 873 Simon Wincote, used
A60 for 960 Aly Deeprose and a left hand drive Volvo 242 for 781 Shaun
O'Donnell. Topping the bill though was a smart looking Sunbeam Rapier for 17
John Twiggs.
Opening
the bill was a ladies
race won by 34
Carolin Heather ahead of 110 Sammy Tyler and 6 Cindy Holdsworth before around 25
assembled for the opening
race of the
programme. 76 Sean Enevoldsen (Capri) blasted the spun 17 Twigzy from the off
before welcome Barrow visitor 591 Marc Blower (Primera estate) stuffed 174 John
Wheeler as the spun 502 Kai May (Capri) took a head-on from 65 Mark Bennett
(Audi 100 coupe). Stinkbridge guest 451 Willy Blackwell piled Harris into the
infield tyres as 731 Shaun Dyer scored on 241 Andy Carter-Waller leaving the
former prone to a package from 252 Will Bignell before the reds came out to
check on the drivers involved in the aforementioned crashes. The race was soon
back into full swing with 525 Wes Starmer running in Bennett's Audi before 455
Rick Finney picked up Bignell and stuffed him into 442 Stu Phillips' Golf but
442 Pottsy shrugged this off to spin 406 Chris Bridger en route to taking the
win. Starmer ended the action with a hit on the luckless Blower en route to a
registering a full contact third with Finney taking second.
There
was a slightly bigger field for heat
two but it was
quieter although 391 Adam Bligdon (Montego estate) had a rough ride getting
planted into the wall by the pack before 88 Tim Wood had 120 Luke Burley round
but Common Crusher revenge was swift as 122 Mark Burley hammered the former
while Luke Burley came under fire from 284 Sam Allmond. Bligdon recovered from
his bad start to run in 60 Dan Waite. Allmond then buried 410 Matthew Tyler but
the latter survived to take the flag from 126 Dave Case and 80 Matt Nutley.
Another
field of around 25 cars for heat
three with 620
Andy Pitts attacking the smart Prairie of 179 Jamie Phillips before Aftermath
young gun 708 Jamie Nottingham nailed 309 Andy Oliver (Cavalier) only to take
one in turn from 109 who was trashed by 602 Shaun Cooper before the Aftermath
struck again with 183 Bobby Wilmer (Primera) running in 55 Alistair Lowe
(Cavalier) hard which left the latter perched on top of his attacker. The reds
came out to check on a shaken Pitts with the race restarting with 143 Sam Begley
(Primera) assaulting 400 Kevin Shinn as Nottingham hammered the smart Bluebird
of 2 Jon Bricknell. 815 Ian Castle (Maestro) took the win from 153 richard
Martin and 323 Andy Walker (Cavalier).
Up
to 35 for the fourth
heat with 588
Peter Kerry (Prelude) and 691 Shifter finding the wall early on which triggered
a pile-up as the Predators shone with 779 Luke Allen hammering Salter as team
mate 79 Ricky Twell delivered hits on both 4 Tracy Cotton and 674 Anthony
Telling (Primera). 36 Rob Cole (Mondeo) attacked 19 Joe Mullarkey (Volvo 440)
before 434 Gary Godsmack weighed in on 08 Hayden Carter. 104 Paul Kennan won
this time with 124 Oris and 373 Rob Wilkinson next home.
Back
to 25 or so cars for the fifth
heat with
Wincote's Riva estate getting wrecked from the start when it was buried by the
traffic which was ultimately bring the reds out but not before 606 Liam Weedon
hammered Sutton while Spiers and Blackwell briefly battled after the reds. The
race restarted with another big first bend push in which Blackwell stuffed
Sutton before the formers team mate Finney scalped Walker allowing 602 Mr Moody
to blast the latter. 134 Scott Hanby (Capri) then delivered a big hit to Pottsy
as Finney motored to the win ahead of TSR pairing 385 Roy Gedge and Mr Moody.
Around
30 for heat
six with Wilmer
again staring as he picked up 888 Chris Crowshaw and rolled his Prairie on the
home straight to bring the reds out straight away. There were numerous spins on
the restart while 48 James Waite (Sunny) and 152 Chris Sargent (Volvo 440) found
the wall. Bricknell then stuffed 80 Nutspeed as 417 Sheldon Gardiner (Sunny)
took the win from 528 Guy Wise (Primera) and 126 Casey.
A
big field of 40 cars gathered for the last
heat and it
kicked off with 400 Shinny following in the Sierra estate of 111 Joe Cotton
which triggered a pile-up with 36 Shaft, Starmer, 478 Anthony Bailey and 79
Twelly all piling in. 23 Dave Evans nailed Bailey only to take one in turn from
Bignell as Pitts and 19 Dove Toe Joe joined the heap. Nottingham then picked up
573 Chris Brooks' Rover and dumped him into the pile with Salter then nailing
the Aftermath man only to take a shot from the lively Bignell with the latter
going on to hammer Shaft. 179 the Leg-End then crashed into the wreckage on the
top bend and was nailed by Luke Burley and Pitts. 779 Munch then blasted the
latter with a stiff hit. Oliver then buried 24 Craig Morgan and 580 Dave Tustian
(Sunny) did the same to 500 Lee May (Sunny coupe) as Luke Burley weighed in on
Morgan. 12 Kenny Gabriel took the win from 814 Mark Barker (Sunny) and Godsmack
ending an excellent race.
The
final
was next with around 30 qualifiers for it with Mr Moody treating the spun Walker
to a big head-on leaving the former open to a cracking hit from 373 Wilko as
Shinny blew up 814 Mr B which brought the reds out for the latter who was shaken
by the hit. The race resumed with Starmer picking up 316 Alan Gregory (Montego
estate) who latched on Nutspeed and they went in hard. Blower scored on 515
Timmy Aldridge and 143 Screamer scalped 134 Toady, the latter recovering only to
fall foul of a big follow-in from the impressive Starmer. Blower continued to
run in 920 Terry Church before Aldridge connected on Starmer as Bricknell took
the flag ahead of Tyler and Keenan.
The
Allcomers
for non qualifiers raised around 40 starters with Twelly straight on the case
running in Radburn as Oliver picked up the Leg-End and buried him into Kerry
before O'Donnell hammered 34 Kyle Belcher allowing Bligdon to T-bone the formers
Volvo. Bailey also piled in and was duly nailed by 27 Gemma Bricknell (Sunny)
with 69 Martyn Cane (Cavalier) and 334 Andrew Warden crashing in soon after. 174
John Wheeler then dished out a stiff hit to Warden as Twelly gave Shaft a
package leaving the Predator open for a big hit from Wheeler with 606 Boomer
then attacking the latter. Belcher landed a shot on the Leg-End as 790 Ryan
Rowland nailed 391 Wayne Shinn (Corolla) with Boomer ending the action by
attacking the Leg-End. Sargent took the flag with Cane and the lively Boomer
next.
A
good field of around 30 returned for the last event but a few sat out of the Allcomers
which saw 153 Willy Swerve attack Deeprose setting the Farina up for a cracking
hit from Blackwell. Blower nailed the Stinkbridge man in turn as the impressive
Bignell blew up 391 Ol Matey only to take one from Nutspeed before Carter-Waller
turned round to meet Gedge on the nose with 792 Barry Osbourn blowing up the
latter. Screamer took the win and we went into the death
with 207 Michael Woodward (Cavalier) T-boning Pottsy before Bignell continued
his excellent performance with a big hit on 207 Compo. Keenan hammered Bignell
in turn as the Leg-End and 32 Dave Gardiner enjoyed a head-on with Godsmack
weighing into the Aftermath pilot in turn. 333 Paul Conde then fired into
Godsmack which set the latter up for a head-on from Belcher while Oliver treated
Godsmack to further punishment allowing Conde to stick it to Oliver. Mark Burley
and Conde then enjoyed some mild head-ons at which point Twelly burst into life
to give the latter a big hit as Mark Burley expired. Conde and Twelly then
exchanged blows with the former outlasting the TSR young gun to take the win.

Just
over 60 cars in the unlimited class
with material in abundance as you can see from the above list. In addition to
that listed there were eight XJs including a used XJ-S for 132 Alan Edwards and
16 Volvos including a now unusual 244 from 691 Jason Gubbey.
Following
a ladies race
which was won by 184 Carl Boswell’s missus in a Volvo 740 estate it was on
with the action with half the cars gridding for the opener.
This began with 46 Maverick meeting 330 Tony Rudge’s stretched Carlton on the
nose as 323 Tufty snapped his customary P5 a treat after a similar encounter
with 18 Richard Webb’s Volvo 240. Maverick also fired up the back of Tufty to
compound his misery as 294 Steve Martindale blew up 417 Shelly’s bizarre Volvo
and 106 Paul Gumm attacked 253 Ben Hunt’s Volvo 240 estate. 244 Baby Bunny now
picked up 18 Gatecrasher who in turn latched onto Rudge taking the Carlton limo
in and wrecking it in style as 35 Rob Joplin sparked up nearby. Cue the reds and
a brief stoppage after which 186 Mike Pullen attacked 720 Matthew Rogerson and
132 Alfie put himself in leaving Maverick to win from 260 Keith Reynolds’
Rover 827 and 88 Tim Wood’s Volvo 740 estate with 720 Rog the only other
finisher.
Heat
two
kicked off with 68 Dicko running 911 Darren Saveall’s XJ in as 433 Ben Smith
rolled his Volvo 240 to bring out the reds. After a brief stoppage 536 Kev
Hardie (XJ) attacked 851 Bode’s Hawk and lone Bear 169 Jason Thompson (Volvo
240 estate) hit both 899 Andy Dodge and 559 Neil Payne as 99 Ritchie Ahern won
from running mate 271 Dean Goodall and 110 Derek Tyler (Volvo 240 estate).
Heat
three
began with Gumm attacking 260 Keefy and paying for it with a shot from Thompson
who was done in turn by 311 Lee Bradbury. 273 Erny powered his stretched Volvo
up the back of 311 Helm in kind as Boswell put Keefy away and Maverick blew up
559 Ug. Bunny now set about the luckless Keefy with 262 Axle then burying Helm
into the 827 and with a further head-on from Maverick Keefy’s day was done.
328 Stu Morse hit Axle and was duly wasted by Pullen who was done in turn by
Bunny with 77 Steve Beasley then hitting the Yank before Maverick latched onto
him and took him over the rubble on the infield. Boswell won from 491 Neil
Sparks (XJ) and Smith.
The
last
heat was fairly
subdued but not for Bungee who felt the force of both Axle and 21 Nobby (Volvo
240 estate) as 77 Bass set about 271 Deano. 124 Carl Korszewski won this one
from 54 Alan Cartwright’s XJ and 499 Lee Charles (Volvo 240 estate).
The
final
kicked off with the hit of the day as Axle obliterated Bode’s Hawk with a huge
shot on the home straight which saw the Humber virtually explode on impact. Cue
instant reds but he was able to crawl from the wreckage unscathed, 502 Kai May
(Capri) managing to register a shot on Axle and take one from 137 Steve
Goldup’s Volvo 240 estate before the reds were shown. On the re-start Erny
buried Bungee and Maverick hit Dicko only to take a package from Thompson in
turn. However he continued with a shot on 124 Oris as Deano won from 110 Yo Yo
Man and Charles, 54 Winnie meeting the latter on the nose during the run-down
lap with 2 Jon Bricknell (Volvo 240 estate) also joining in with a shot on the
luckless Charles.
Almost
a quarter of the field returned for the derby
which began with Gumm meeting 266 Charlie Renshaw on the nose as Bungee hit
Beasley and paid for it with a package from Bass. Wood nailed Bass in turn as
did Maverick before Oris finished the AMC and was duly hammered by Axle. Dicko
hit Axle and was wasted by Charles with 294 Trigger and Beasley finishing Oris
before enjoying a head-on. Charles met Bungee on the nose and 92 Jason Paris
(Volvo 240 estate) fired up the back of the latter as Erny hit Beasley and
Charles moved in with a head-on to Beasley, a further head-on with Erny enough
to give him the win bringing the curtain down on a great day’s racing that the
big man would certainly have approved of.
